This position is responsible for conducting preoperative testing and patient counseling.  The RN will provide nursing care for the patient in the immediate pre-operative area and the postoperative/post-anesthesia period, assessing and documenting patient’s status upon arrival in either the pre-operative area or the recovery room.  Provides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered, monitoring patient and informing surgeon or anesthetist of observed complications.

 

Job Requirements :

 

1.     Education - High School Diploma or EGD certification.

2.     Graduate of accredited school of nursing

3.     RN with active license in appropriate state

4.     CPR certification

5.     ACLS certification

6.     Evidence of leadership qualities.

7.     Strong ethical and moral character references.

8.     Language skills adequate for high –level written, interpersonal and telephone communication in American English

 

Preferred:

 

1.     PALS certification.

2.     ASC experience preferred.

3.     Computer literacy

H.    Duties

 

The Staff RN Pre-op/PACU is responsible for:

 

Job Specific Duties and Task                                                                          

 

1.     Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel for management of the preoperative area and the recovery room.

 

2.     Organizes nursing activities efficiently, considering staff abilities when delegating activities.

 

3.     Uses Equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care.  Monitors patient airway and circulation with the assistance of applied monitoring equipment, if applicable.

 

4.     Confirms that proper techniques and procedure are used according to accepted standards of practice.

 

5.     Assists in managing inventory of supplies, drugs, and equipment to maintain availability and stock levels in the preoperative and post operative areas.

 

6.     Maintains order and cleanliness of preoperative and post operative areas.

 

7.     Performs thorough preoperative patient assessment required in the outpatient setting.  Performs safe and individualized nursing care for the patient in the immediate post operative/post anesthesia period.

 

8.     Assist in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient prior to admission.  Assess and documents the patient’s physical and emotional status upon arrival in the recovery room.

 

9.     Provides preoperative instruction and explanation of patient rights and responsibilities.

 

10.  Documents post anesthesia care and identity of second person in the recovery room during the patient’s recovery from anesthesia/sedation according to approved policies and procedures.

 

11.  Provides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered.

 

12.  Describes the preoperative experience to the patient/significant other, including what to expect before, during and after the procedure and how the significant other will participate.

 

13.  Obtains pertinent patient records prior to patient’s arrival for preoperative testing.

 

14.  Performs all preoperative testing (i.e., laboratory work, electrocardiogram, x-ray, etc.)

 

15.  Reports all abnormal values to anesthesiologist/attending surgeon.  Monitors patient and informs surgeon or anesthetist of observed complications.

 

16.  Explains informed consent for surgery, patients’ right/responsibilities, and preoperative and post/postoperative instructions.

 

17.  Obtains necessary signatures.

 

18.  Informs patient about routine care and procedures related to the preoperative experience.

 

19.  Discusses all findings with anesthesiologist prior to anesthesiologist. Preoperative evaluation of the patient.

 

20.  Provides comfort and reassurance to the patient and supports the patient’s right to privacy, dignity and confidentiality.

 

21.  Documents preoperative care according to policy/procedure.

 

22.  Ensures that the patient’s chart is complete on day before surgery is scheduled.

 

23.  Performs thorough post operative patient assessment prior to discharge of the patient.

 

24.  Assist in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient in preparation for discharge.

 

25.  Develops a plan of care for the patient based on the assessment data.

 

26.  Reviews postoperative instructions and prescription from the surgeon with patient and significant other and documents in the patient’s medical record.

 

27.  Informs patient and family about appropriate care and procedure to follow upon returning home.

 

28.  Determines that patient and significant other understood conditions that require immediate care/method to obtain immediate care.

 

29.  Daily inventory and restock Pre-op and PACU supplies/meds.  Order supplies as needed, preps Pre-op and PACU areas for next day according to scheduled procedures.
