We are growing! United Steel is currently seeking a Mechanic with 5-plus years of diesel and gas automotive experience.  This position safely repairs and maintains manual and automatic trucks, and other automotive vehicles by performing the following duties:


Duties & Responsibilities


  • Reads job order and observes and listens to truck in operation to determine malfunction and to plan work procedures
  • Installs new ignition systems, aligns front wheels, changes or recharges batteries, and replaces transmissions and other parts
  • Examines protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on trucks, and makes adjustments
  • Lubricates moving parts and drives repaired truck to verify conformance to specifications
  • Performs DOT safety checks and follows federal motor carrier guidelines
  • Evaluates and troubleshoots using standard diagnostic procedures to determine best practice for repair
  • Maintain emissions testing equipment and conduct appropriate emissions testing as required
  • Operates a manual jack and ensures that all safety precautions are taken to avoid unsafe conditions or hazards
  • Orders parts and maintains an appropriate inventory level
  • Schedules preventive maintenance as required
  • Operates industrial truck or electric hoist to assist in loading or moving materials and products
  • Maintains the truck in a clean orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations
  • Perform prescribed preventative maintenance on equipment as required

Qualifications


  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Five (5) years or more related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Requires a broad knowledge of gas, diesel and hydraulic systems and mechanical aptitude
  • Basic shop math, reading, writing, and interpret English, basic mechanical skills, effectively utilize lifting devices, ability to interpret shop paperwork and work instructions, ability to verify log and procedures for accuracy.
  • Skills Desired: strong attention to detail, ability to multitask, good communications skills
  • ASE certification highly desired
  • Welding Experience highly desired          
  • Must pass criminal background check and drug test.   


Working Conditions


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, noise and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of condition within a manufacturing environment.  The company provides engineering controls, PPE and regular training to mitigate the employee’s exposure to these elements.
