Occasional County travel may be required. 12-hour shift with the possibility of a callback Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Detention Corporal, the employee in this position is responsible for the confinement, supervision, and well-being of suspects and convicted criminals until they are released from Ford County custody. Essential Function Statement(s) Be a citizen of the United States Pass a post-offer/ pre-employment drug screen Possess and maintain a valid Kansas Drivers License Follow specific procedures for processing inmates in and out of custody. Supervises the work of inmates assigned various labor tasks; Oversees the transport preparation of inmates to and from the court, medical or other required appointments, and other facilities; Monitor inmates for signs of illness or injury; request medical assistance and ensure medical instruction and follow up plans are followed while in custody; Prepares appropriate reports and accounts according to established form and protocol; Administer personal hygiene items when needed; Travel, by walking or by motor vehicle, to various sites within the complex and County Walking on uneven terrain, climbing over fences, and opening gates to access the property for security inspection. MARGINAL FUNCTIONS Travel to outside locations to transport inmates back to Ford County. Other related duties as necessary or required. Position qualifications Competency Statement(s) Accuracy- Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly. Communication, Oral and Written- Ability to communicate effectively with others using the spoken word and proper writing style in all communication vehicles. Problem Solving- Ability to find a solution using an established protocol and policy. Limited individual problem solving exists. SKILLS &amp; ABILITIES Experience: This is an entry-level position. The employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills within six months. Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required. Skills: Knowledge of detention facilities and Federal, State, and local laws governing the confinement of inmates. Knowledge of proper use of emergency vehicles, radios, computers, typewriter, teletypes, and other office equipment. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, county officials, and the public. Problem Solving: Limited problem solving exists in this position. Duties follow prescribed policies and procedures. Decision Making: Limited decision-making exists in this position. Supervision: Employee does not have supervisory responsibility for subordinate personnel. Personal Relations: Constant contact with the criminal element and frequent contact with other county departments, and the general public. Employees must professionally conduct themselves at all times. Working Conditions: Position requires work with a criminal element that may involve physical contact and exertion. Life threats, exposure to disease, and highly stressful situations are factors in this position.
