Job Description ***oration has an opening for a Training Specialist. The office location for this position is Warrendale, Pennsylvania.
Position Focus:
To develop and lead a training program(s) intended to prepare students for practical employment as Protection and Control (P&C) technicians and engineers at levels ranging from entry test technicians to lead commissioning engineers. The program(s) will include classroom material but will be highly focused on hands-on activities in a lab that simulates a substation control house and include a strong focus on safety in addition to technical skills. The program(s) will include student evaluation.
Training Specialist of the Client Electrical Services and Systems group designs and develops instructor-led and Web-based training and acts as either the assistant or lead instructor for training programs given to Client employees and Client customers.
Specific Skills Required:
• Experienced in substation entrance procedures and NERC/CIP requirements.
• General knowledge of HV switchyard apparatus application, operation and commissioning including:
o CT, PT and CCVT testing
o Circuit breaker controls and alarms circuits and functional testing
o Transformer controls and alarms circuits and functional testing
o Isolation and LOTO procedures
• General knowledge in protective relays and protection philosophies including:
o Transformer protection
o Bus protection
o Transmission line protection
o Generator protection
o Capacitor protection
Expert in commissioning P&C equipment including:
o Reading all drawing types and other documents related to utility substations
o Developing work plans and clearances for P&C systems
o Safe work practices associated with work in relay panels
o Wiring check methods and practices
o Functional checks and practices based on schematic diagrams
o Loop and phasing checks of CT and PT circuits based on three-line diagrams using test sources
o Performing in-service and energization checks using installed devices and supplemental meters
- Advanced knowledge of protective relays and relay testing including:
- Creating settings files from basis documents for multiple relay types and manufacturers including SEL, Client-Multilin.
- Performing manual relay tests using Doble 6150 with Protection Suite Control Panel and similar test equipment (Omicron, AVO/Megger, etc.)
- Performing automated relay tests using Doble 6150 with Protection Suite Test Plans and RTS and similar test software (Omicron, AVO/Megger, etc.)
- Performing 'end-to-end' tests on transmission line protection schemes including:
Step-distance
Direct Transfer Trip (DTT)
Permissive Under-reach Transfer Trip (PUTT)
Permissive Over-reach Transfer Trip (POTT)
Directional Comparison Blocking (DCB)
Directional Comparison Unblocking (DCU)
General knowledge of P&C related communication schemes and hardware including:
o Fiber Optic
o Ethernet
o Serial
o Powerline Carrier
General knowledge of SCADA equipment including SEL RTAC and Client SMP hardware
-Candidate should have technical knowledge of safe-work practices as described in National Fire Protection Association Standard 70E and OSHA 29CFR1910 Subpart R and Subpart S.
The successful candidate will be a member of the Power Systems Training Team who conduct e-learning, classroom training, hands-on training and coordinate training events.
The successful candidate will create, maintain and update lesson plans and classroom-reference materials.
The successful candidate will work closely with product-line managers and factory reliability engineers to develop the curricula for new training programs.
The successful candidate will assist Service Sales Engineers in investigating and implementing opportunities for the training of customers.
The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and conducting training events including, but not limited to, communicating the set-up, scheduling, travel, equipment and material needs to the training coordinator.
The successful candidate will be responsible for student evaluations, course evaluations, tracking course cost, actively seeking cost savings and opportunities for course improvements.
Job Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering technology from an accredited institution. Preference given to electrical engineering with a power system focus.
Minimum 10 years work experience in the electric utility transmission P&C space. Experience as a utility employee or direct contractor; or vendor providing P&C services to utility customers is acceptable. Focus is on P&C commissioning activities including both green field and brown field projects.
- Classroom presentation and technical writing skill.
- Professional presence and an ability to establish rapport with a variety of personalities in multiple levels of the organization.
- Understanding of adult learning styles.
- Proficiency in the use of the tools required for the development of new training materials including Microsoft Office, WebEx, and other Web-based training media.
- Ability to lift, move and set up demonstration equipment of various weight up to 40 pounds and move demonstration equipment on wheels weighing in excess of 40 pounds.
