Job Summary

Serves as a technical focal point responsible for applying technical expertise to maintain the design basis, management and control configuration, and performance of critical facilities systems in support of safe and continuous reliable operation of Battelle facilities. Position has a strong focus on industrial control systems such as building automation systems (BAS) and laboratory control and monitoring systems (LCMS) and includes electrical switching and controls, fire alarm systems, and energy management to promote energy conservation. This position is onsite at our West Jefferson, OH campus and will also provide support for the King Avenue campus and regional locations on an as needed basis.

Responsibilities Plans, schedules, and implements processes, resources, and staff necessary to efficiently operate and maintain facilities. Ensures that business continuity plans, emergency drawings, operation and maintenance manuals, and as built-drawings are kept current on a per project and/or annual basis. Ensures formal work control and change control processes are followed. Maintains configuration documents through change control/configuration management to include system design descriptions, system and component labeling, verification, and validation. Evaluates system performance and leads, troubleshooting, re-programming, re-calibration, and correction of equipment deficiencies to return systems to normal operation. Participates in and supports regular system assessments to ensure continued operational readiness of assigned systems. Assists with the performance, documentation and maintenance of equipment/component records associated with the assessment process, and develops a strategy for managing systems structures, and components. Utilizes site computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for tracking of maintenance, repairs, and systems and controls adjustments. Maintains cognizance of system-specific maintenance/operations history as well as industry operating experience. Maintains active involvement in day-to-day activities and identifies emerging trends and provides technical assistance, as necessary, to determine operability or correct out-of-specification conditions or evaluate questionable data. Ensures industrial control systems are compliant and kept current with established cybersecurity guidelines. Prepares written requirements for repairs or for ordering parts from a supplier. Develops work plans/ procedures which identify tasks/steps and conducts hazard analyses. Works in conjunction with Facilities and Operations, laboratory management, and outside contractors to verify that all job specifications are met. Ensures work performed is integrated with site operations and performed in a safe and effective manner with no deleterious effects on projects due to incorrect scope of work. Participates in the annual capital and expense plan development and quarterly updates through identification and prioritization of infrastructure projects required to ensure continuity of operations. Advises on life cycle costs and maintainability of major infrastructure systems. Advises on existing system capacity and performance parameters in support of new facility projects and renovations. Responsibilities

Responds to alarms during normal works hours and to emergency calls during non-business hours. Determines corrective actions, contacts the appropriate staff, and conducts necessary follow-up actions. Supports work activities related to shutdowns, repairs, and emergency situations. Assumes managerial responsibilities during the manager’s absence. Performs special tasks requiring similar duties and responsibilities assigned.

Key Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; seven years of related experience as an engineering control systems specialist or project manager; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a related field. Demonstrated ability to guide, direct and manage business and operation activities. Knowledge of general business planning and administration, project management, quality assurance, and environmental, safety and health policies and procedures (knowledge of Battelle operations a plus). Must possess thorough knowledge of technical and regulatory requirements for a laboratory operation which includes experience in building systems, HVAC, automation, and laboratory controls (e.g., Siemens, Honeywell, Phoenix, etc.). Proven capability to establish effective working relationships within a matrixed organization. Strong interpersonal skills (including team-building skills). Refined oral and written communication skills. Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret clearance and may be required to obtain special clearances and inoculations to work in high hazard research laboratories. Preferred Qualifications Experience in facility related operations in a laboratory environment.
