POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides basic life support care and evaluation of patients on scene and during transport at the

EMT level.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (required):

  1. Identifies, intervenes, and stabilizes the ill or injured patient during interfaculty and intrafacility transport under the direction and in collaboration with the transporting physician.
  2. Initiates and implements interventions for the ill or injured patient in emergent situations and provides patient care based protocols and within the scope of Kansas Board of EMS. Monitors, records and communicates patient condition and treatment, as appropriate.
  3. Provides population specific education to the patient and family about the patient's illness andtherapeutic interventions.
  4. Inspects, maintains and cares for equipment to ensure safety of the transport team, patients and public.
  5. Ensures patient and employee safety in all areas of operations;
  6. Cooperates with Federal, State, and other local departments/agencies in search, rescue, and medical emergency situations;
  7. Respond to emergency and non-emergent calls operates at his/her certification adhering to medical protocols, policies and under the direction of the medical director.
  8. Respond to non-emergency calls to assist the public and other response agencies, taking appropriate action to minimize the loss of life and/or property;
  9. Follows departmental mission statement; core values and applicable departmental polices, rules and regulations.
  10. Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure compliance with HIPAA laws and regulations;
  11. Maintain current knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, and regulations related to aspectsof EMS;
  12. Maintain positive working relationship with hospitals, medical professionals and staff, law enforcement, public works, fire, and other agencies in Pottawatomie County and surrounding areas;
  13. Must have and maintain a valid Kansas Driver’s License.

The work is often performed while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and could be

performed while carrying additional equipment. The work is typically performed in an office,

outdoors, and at the scenes of emergency events. Employee may be exposed to fire, smoke, noise,

dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases or pathogens,

irritating chemicals and weather extremes. PPE items include goggles, masks, gloves, and all other

protective clothing required for EMS operations.


MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Attends seminars and training sessions;
  2. Performs departmental inventory control;
  3. Educate self and staff on county geography, streets, roads and buildings;
  4. Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

Supervision/Accountability:

Responsible for patient care as a EMT on a scene and in transport. Requires critical thinking skills,

decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

  • HS or Equivalent/Diploma/GED (required)
  • Associate Degree (preferred)
  • National Registry (preferred)
  • BLS Healthcare Provider course completion card from the American Heart Association is required within 45 days of hire or job transfer date
  • Driver License from the state of Kansas or Valid Driver's License (required)
  • Licensed as an EMT by the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services (KSBEMS) required
  • Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC) or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) certification, or equivalent required within 12 months of hir
