Summary of Position

North Cascades Institute (NCI) seeks an Operations Assistant to be an integral part of our Operations Team. In this role, the Operations Assistant works in both the Housekeeping and Kitchen departments. This position is based out of the Institute's field campus in North Cascades National Park at the Institute's Environmental Learning Center (ELC). The jobsite is in a remote National Park which can experience snow-covered roads, avalanches, wildfire, smoke, wild animals, and flooding. This is a seasonal, full time position supervised by the Operations Manager for housekeeping operations and the Food Service Supervisor for kitchen operations.

Responsibilities

Cleaning

  • Performs routine cleaning of the Learning Center's facilities.
  • Maintains campus garbage and recycle containers.
  • Maintains orderly, clean, and well-stocked supply closets.
  • Promptly reports housekeeping issues to supervisor and immediately mitigates hazards encountered in the course of duties.
  • Complies with infection-control policies as trained.
  • Performs pest control removal as trained.
  • Cleans staff housing as assigned.
  • Performs deep cleaning projects as assigned.
  • Reports housekeeping supply needs promptly to the supervisor.
  • Assists with routine grounds keeping.
  • Cleans Institute vehicles as assigned.

Laundry

  • Gathers, washes, dries, folds and distributes laundry for participant lodges and other accommodations as assigned.
  • Maintains orderly, clean, and functional laundry room.

Kitchen Operations

  • Prepares meals on a daily basis, served buffet-style.
  • Maintains all health and food safety standards and procedures consistent with applicable food safety regulations.
  • Maintains exemplary standards of cleanliness in the dining hall, kitchen and walk-in.
  • Assists in ware-washing.
  • Actively participates in our recycling program.
  • Resolves customer complaints, disputes or grievances while providing excellent customer service and sensitivity to participant needs.

General

  • Participates in general staff responsibilities such as staff meetings, hands to work, risk management, hospitality and other jobs as assigned by the Operations Manager.
  • Occasional participation in Marketing and Development projects: photography, blog posts, etc.

Housing

Subsidized housing available. Private rooms in shared houses are often available. In some cases, roommates in shared rooms may be required.

Required Qualifications

  • General housekeeping experience, or equivalent.
  • General food service experience, or equivalent.
  • Ability to accommodate a varied work schedule including longer days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Ability to work with historically excluded populations.
  • Final offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check that may include employment history, national criminal background check, national sex offender registry search and a driving history check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous housekeeping and/or food service experience at other residential learning centers, camps, schools or similar facilities.


Benefits:

This is a seasonal, full-time, non-exempt position. This is a split wage position, with the job scheduled as assigned. For Housekeeping duties, the pay rate is $18.00-$19.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. For Cook duties, the pay rate is $20.00 - $22.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. This position is subject to a $1 increase for utilizing non-NCI housing. The job location for this position is at the Environmental Learning Center.

  • Paid holidays: 6 days estimated between start and end dates
  • Sick leave: ~8 hours per month
  • Vacation leave: 4 days for positions with a duration of 6 or more months. Positions less than 6 months are not eligible for vacation leave.
  • Service Days: 2 days per year
  • Ability to participate in Institute pro deals
  • Yearly stipend to participate in Institute programs

Benefits are prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week. Employees are responsible for their own health insurance.
