The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at the University of Iowa invites applications for an open rank tenure-track faculty position for broad areas of Hearing Science / Audiology , particularly encouraging recent graduates, post-doctoral fellows, and assistant-level professors to apply.

The Iowa CSD has a strong audiology faculty with complementary research interests and expertise that has developed a unique and ideal culture of collaboration. The research areas of our current audiology faculty members include genetics, neuroscience, physiology, pediatric audiology / language development, and hearing aids. We welcome motivated applicants who will further strengthen and expand our research portfolio by bringing new perspectives and complementary research expertise. Examples of such complementary research areas are cochlear implants, electrophysiology, pediatric diagnostics, and computational audiology, although qualified candidates in any subfield of hearing science and audiology are encouraged to apply.

CSD tenure-track faculty members actively collaborate with clinical faculty at the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center, and researchers at the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the Department of Neurosurgery, the College of Public Health, the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, and the Department of Computer Science. Additionally, there are many exciting and innovative programs available to CSD faculty, including the Development and Learning from Theory to Application (DeLTA) Center, the multidisciplinary Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD), the Iowa Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program, and the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Neuroscience.

Long established cochlear implant research program. Iowa has been a pioneer in cochlear implant (CI) research and clinical application. Our CI research has been generously funded by an NIH Program Grant for the past 40 years (P50 DC"Iowa Cochlear Implant Clinical Research Center I - VIII"), to which the Iowa CSD has been a major contributor. This history has created an unparalleled infrastructure and resources. Examples of resources include a large registry of patient participants, professional research support from clinical audiologists, experimental equipment and facilities including CI electrophysiological measures, EEG, CT, MRI,PET, eye tracking and pupillometry, and collaborative opportunities with established CI researchers in otolaryngology, psychiatry, radiology, psychological and brain sciences, and computer science. This environment will provide an ideal nurturing environment for the rising stars of CI research.

Outstanding clinical services and education. The Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center is a robust training clinic that provides a wide range of services to clients of all ages with a variety of communication differences and disorders. Clinical educators are experts in their area of practice and use best practices in service provision and training of clinical students.

Exceptional students. Our PhD program is one of our greatest strengths. PhD graduates are hired as faculty in highly-ranked institutions worldwide. The Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program is among the most competitive in the nation and internationally renowned. A new CSD building is coming. In fall of 2025, the CSD program will move to the new Health Sciences Academic Building. This new building will be a gateway to unparalleled educational experiences, with modern experiential classrooms, a cutting-edge speech and audiology clinic, and state-of-the-art research laboratories. More than 48,000 square feet dedicated to CSD, including 18,000 square feet of clinical space and 29 laboratories.

The successful applicant will be expected to: a) contribute to the department's strong record of research accomplishments by establishing and maintaining an active program of research; b) contribute to our educational mission by teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in their area of expertise; and c) contribute to the department's mission to serve the university, the profession, and the community.

Education Requirement:

Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related field by the anticipated start date of August 20, 2025.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates at the Assistant Professor level must:

  • have earned a PhD in communication sciences and disorders or a related field by the start of the fall 2025 semester;
  • demonstrate clear evidence of potential to develop and maintain an active and productive research program in the candidate's area of interest and departmental needs;
  • demonstrate clear evidence of potential to obtain external funding;
  • provide evidence that suggests the ability to teach effectively at the college level.

Candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level must:

  • demonstrate an active and productive research program in the candidate's area of interest and departmental needs;
  • demonstrate an established record of external funding or viable attempts to obtain external funding;
  • demonstrate a record of effective teaching at the post-secondary level.

Desirable Qualifications:
