Job Description

Hilo Benioff Medical Center and the East Hawaii Region of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation are seeking Health Information Technician IV (Health Information Supervisor) to provide support and leadership within the Medical Records department. Health Information Technicians are responsible for para-professional health information management functions subject to departmental policies and regulations.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Reviewing medical records for completeness and accuracy, and translating diseases and operations into the proper coding symbols
Filing medical records or preparing records for retention
Typing medical reports of operations, imaging or laboratory examinations, or special treatments given to patients
Compiling statistics, including the hospital’s daily census, information on reportable diseases for public health authorities and others
Assisting the medical staff by preparing special studies and tabulating data from records for research.
Developing new and revised procedures for the Medical Records department
Reviewing working situations to ensure staff are following guidelines, policies and procedures
Recommending improvement to health information management processes
Supervises staff in the performance of para professional health information management activities

Education Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience Required: Five (5) or more years of experience, including:

Medical Records Experience Requirement: Two (2) or more years of medical records experience (experience in the health information management department of a hospital or allied medical care facility).
Specialized Experience: Two (2) or more years of experience in a health information management department of a hospital or allied medical care facility which involved the performance of paraprofessional health information management work requiring knowledge of the nature and uses of medical records, medical terminology and established health information management classification, coding, filing and indexing systems; and the ability to analyze and file medical records and prepare reports and summaries from medical records.
Supervisory Experience: One (1) or more year of work experience which demonstrated the applicant's knowledge of and ability to apply the principles, practices, techniques and methods of supervision including: (1) planning, organizing and directing the work of others; (2) assigning and reviewing work; (3) advising others on difficult work problems; (4) timing and scheduling work; and (5) training and developing employees.

Substitutions Allowed

Excess Specialized Experience may be substituted for Medical Records Experience.
Successful completion of an associate degree in a health information technology program (HIT) accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information management Education (CAHIIM) or recognized by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), may be substituted for all of the requirements for the class Health Information Technician I.
Successful completion of an associate degree in a health information technology program (HIT) in a foreign country whose professional association has an agreement of reciprocity with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) may be substituted for all the requirements for the class Health Information Technician I.
Successful completion of the correspondence course or the AHIMA Independent Study Programs in health information technology (HIT) and an associate’s degree from an accredited college may be substituted for all of the requirements for the class Health Information Technician I.
Successful completion of a health information technology program of less than two years duration at a post-secondary institution accredited by the American Health Information Management Association may be substituted for the Specialized Experience on a month-for-month basis.
Possession of a current Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT) certificate received through successful qualification on the national accreditation examination administered by the American Health Information Management Association may be substituted for all of the requirements for the class Health Information Technician II and I.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
