As a Data and Applied Scientist you will join a diverse team that is responsible for collecting and analyzing engineering data across Microsoft, leveraging the SPACE developer productivity framework, and developing metrics, actionable insights, and data products that teams from across the company can use to make Microsoft’s developers the most productive on the planet. We are looking for people who ideally have practical experience in the software development process, especially for large-scale projects, in either industry or open-source settings. You should be familiar with the best practices and tools for software engineering, such as design, testing, debugging, documentation, collaboration, and deployment. Being able to effectively communicate your understanding of what types of inferences can be drawn from data in situations of statistical uncertainty is a plus. Work with product managers and software engineers to dive deep into telemetry data and user experiences. Work with data engineers to develop production-level metrics and models that will be leveraged by Microsoft leadership teams throughout the company. Construct behavioral metrics and statistical models that accurately describe software engineering practices and experiences. Leverage your understanding of software engineering practices and systems along with clear communication to build trust with internal stakeholders and drive actions from insights. Required Basic Qualifications: Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field o OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) or consulting experience o OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 2+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results o OR equivalent experience. Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience working as a software engineer on a software development team, which will provide foundational context to the Engineering Thrive initiative. 2+ years experience doing data analysis, statistics, and modeling in python or R. 2+ years experience with SQL or other query language. Prior experience using Visual Studio, VS Code, GitHub, Azure DevOps, and Azure cloud services in development and production scenarios. Advanced degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or Computer Science. 1+ years of experience designing and analyzing controlled experiments and observational analyses using causal inference techniques. 1+ years of experience analyzing unstructured text data (such as open survey responses) to develop patterns and insights. 1+ years of experience analyzing systems-generated telemetry data (ideally from software products or websites) to identify patterns and insights. The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $94,300 - $182,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $120,900 - $198,600 per year.
