Description

The Water Resources Department Wastewater Treatment Plant is seeking a CDL Driver. Duties include performing difficult skilled work in the regular operation of a hook lift/roll off truck and tractor with dump trailer combination in the disposal of solids from the Lynchburg Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility. The Driver will also assist Plant Operators. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Shift supervisor. Work is performed in various weather conditions ranging from extreme heat to extreme cold.

This position requires driving in the local area and offers competitive benefits for employees at $26 monthly for medical, dental and vision. There are also retirement benefits with the Virginia Retirement System.

Starting pay is $20./hour.

Essential Duties
  • Operates a 5 or 6 axle, 75,000pound road tractor dump trailer combination while transporting and disposing of wastewater solids from the wastewater plant to the appropriate solid waste management facility;
  • Operates a 3 or 4 axle 55,000pound hook lift/roll off truck on while transporting and disposing of wastewater solids from the wastewater plant to the appropriate solid waste management facility;
  • Coordinates loads with solid waste management facility staff and WWTP staff to ensure loads reach solid waste management facility at appropriate times;
  • Unloads WWTP solids from vehicle at solid waste management facility site at appropriate location, washes excess material from outside of truck (to prevent spillage on highway) and returns to WWTP;
  • Spots, connects and disconnects trailers at the WWTP in appropriate location;
  • Spots, connects and disconnects roll off canisters at the WWTP in appropriate location;
  • Performs minor PM and maintenance on trucks, canisters and trailers such as light bulbs, lubrication of dogs, rollers etc.;
  • Make necessary VDOT equipment checks;
  • Keeps and maintenances records such as manifests, truck inspection DOT log etc. as required for function of job;
  • Operates backhoe or similar equipment;
  • Assists with snow removal at plant site;
  • Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment;
  • Cleans trucks and other equipment;
  • Assists plant operations staff as requested;
  • Collects and properly handles samples from loads;
  • Operates WWTP equipment as required;
  • Makes checks of plant equipment as required;
  • Responds to emergency calls;
  • Operates other equipment, forklift, front end loader, and dump trucks;
  • Makes regular tours of plant and equipment to insure proper operation;
  • Maintains logs of all pertinent operational events and chemicals used, and records readings from meters and instruments;
  • Starts up, shuts down, regulates and/or adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, air compressors, valves, boilers, grinders and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions;
  • Collects samples of raw sewage, primary treatment effluent and grit;
  • Removes grease from settling tanks, rakes bar screens and cleans and clears basins, troughs and other components;
  • Measures sludge quantities in tanks;
  • Makes minor or emergency repairs;
  • Cleans and maintains plant spaces;
  • Enters data into computer:
  • Adjusts chemical feed rates;
  • Fills chemical hoppers and handles hazardous chemicals;
  • Operates sludge hauling equipment;
  • May work in tanks and well as required, work is at times performed in confined spaces;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declare a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Minimum Education and Experience Required

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.

Additional Requirements
  • Must have approved access to a telephone.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia Class "A" commercial license.
  • Relevant background checks must be completed and approved including pre-employment drug and alcohol screening required.
  • Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
