General Function

The Director of Athletics is the chief administrator for the University's intercollegiate athletics program and establishes policies and procedures that achieve the parallel goals of development of quality, competitive athletics teams and support of the individual educational goals of student-athletes. The Director ensures University compliance with applicable National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), athletic conferences and University rules and regulations governing all facets of intercollegiate athletics programs. The Director supervises a staff of athletic coaches, professional and support personnel, develops and manages operating budgets for the intercollegiate athletics program, and participates in fund-raising activities as appropriate.

Description of Primary Duties

The Director ensures University compliance with applicable National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), athletic conferences and University rules and regulations governing all facets of intercollegiate athletics programs. The Director supervises a staff of athletic coaches, professional and support personnel, develops and manages operating budgets for the intercollegiate athletics program, and participates in fund-raising activities as appropriate.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor's degree is required, with an emphasis in a discipline relevant to the multiple tasks and duties expected of the Director. A Master's degree is preferred.

Experience: At least five years of experience in athletics administration is required, preferably at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level athletic program. Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations governing recruitment, player eligibility and related functions is required. Substantial budgetary experience is required. Experience in external relations is required. Experience at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) is preferred.

Skills: Strong oral and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills are required. Management, budgeting, and organizational skills are required.

Other: The scope of the position frequently requires weekend and evening work and requires overnight, out-of-town travel.
