Job Summary: Provides direct and indirect patient care in the critical care setting. Monitors and provides assessment of the cardiac monitor and telemetry status of patients in ICU and on the Med/Surg unit under the direction of the Critical Care Nurse. Assists the Critical Care Nurse to prepare and compile the records in the ICU unit. Initiates directions from physician and nursing staff. Provides assistance in patient care activities as directed by the Critical Care Nurse.


Job Duties and Responsibilities :

Print and provide basic interpretation of monitor strips and document in the appropriate CPSI flowchart for ICU patients and telemetry patients on the Med/Surg area under the direction of the Critical Care Nurse. The frequency of the interpretation of the monitor strips is under the supervision of the Critical Care Nurse.

Primary responsibility to pay attention to any monitor alarms and check the patient immediately.

To provide assistance to the Critical Care Nurse by performing ward clerk duties at the monitor station. This will include:

  • Transcription of physician orders in the computer system within 1 hour
  • Verify orders in the computer system
  • Logs all patients in the logbooks and in computer upon admission, transfer, discharge, or expiration.
  • Orders supplies and printing weekly under the direction of the Critical Care Nurse.
  • Posts clinical reports from the computer to the chart and brings results to the attention of the charge nurse.
  • Answer’s telephone/intercom in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family.


Direct Care:

  • Provides basic nursing care to acutely ill patients within the nursing assistant’s scope of practice that includes actions that meet psychosocial needs and physical needs as needed by the Critical Care Nurse. All care provided away from the monitor station must be done so any alarms from the cardiac monitor can be checked immediately.
  • Demonstrates compliance with no pass rule.
  • Demonstrates compliance with white boards in patient rooms
  • Completes work assignments within designated times. Utilizes time management efficiency.
  • Provides assistance in the performance of basic patient care responsibilities, including a.m. and p.m. care activities, considering needs specific to the standard of acre for patient’s age and condition including pediatric, pediatric and general population.
  • Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate to the Critical Care Nurse any observed changes in patients monitor status or responses.
  • Provides explanation to patient and family prior to administering care to patient, answers question within scope of practice.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to the Critical Care Nurse, House Supervisor, co-workers and nurses.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical /health care errors.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist the Critical Care Nurse with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of an R.N.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Treats patient and their families with respect and dignity ensuring patient confidentiality.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient’s family in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Meets current documentations standards and policies and completes within the shift.
  • Manages and operates equipment safety and correctly this includes the Critical Care monitoring system.
  • Coordinate’s patient care cardiac monitoring under the direct supervision of the Critical Care Nurse.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

  • Monitor and assessment of monitor strips under the direction of the Critical Care Nurse
  • Stay aware of cardiac monitor alarms at all times
  • Medical/Surgical asepsis is carried out during patient care.
Requirements:

Professional Requirements:

  • Current BLS Provider
  • Completion of a Cardiac Monitor Class
  • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  • Completes annual education requirements, (mandatory marbled packets and annual ICU checklist.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized time system correctly.
  • Completes required in-services in a timely fashion.
  • Attends staff meetings in Critical Care and Med/Surg as needed.
  • Completes annual laboratory testing, TB testing, per hospital policy.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Communicates the mission, vision and care ethics and goals of the hospital.
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, department and staff.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.


Regulatory Requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent is preferred.
  • CNA or EMT required.
  • Current BCLS (CPR) certification.
  • Minimum of six months to one year of related work experience preferred.
