Surgery Sterile Processing Tech - Per Diem*

*IMPORTANT NOTE: In lieu of benefits due to "per diem" status, 15% will be added to the hourly rate. Per diem employees are offered work on an "as-needed" basis.*


POSITION SUMMARY:

Maintains, keeps records and processes surgical instruments and equipment according to industry standards.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Scholastic achievement equal to high school education preferred.
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique preferred.
  • Knowledge of patient care equipment preferred.
  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend the English language.
  • Must be able to communicate routine information effectively with attention to detail required.


POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Knowledge

  • Maintains working knowledge of the department's instrumentation and equipment.
  • Reviews surgery schedule, ensures all instruments are readily available according to surgeon's preference cards.
  • Places orders for special items as required.
  • Acts as liaison with Purchasing Department and vendors.
  • Assures technicians send damaged or inappropriate equipment to appropriate place (Biomedical Engineering, maintenance or vendor) for timely repair/replacement.
  • Responds quickly and efficiently to provide items as needed during emergency situations.
  • Refers conflicts and procedural questions to nurse manager and OR staff.


Processing Equipment

  • Demonstrates the ability to use processing equipment to clean and decontaminate surgical instrumentation, according to manufactures recommendations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current standards on decontamination and sterilization techniques.
  • Ensures manufacture's recommendations for use of: autoclave, washer, ultrasonic cleaner, Steris 1E system, Sterrad, and other necessary equipment are followed.
  • Uses appropriate cleaning solutions.
  • Cleans, decontaminates and inspects surgical instruments.
  • Reconstructs and wraps surgical trays for sterilization.
  • Ensures all instrumentation entering the department from outside the facility is processed according to current standards, and facility policies.
  • Remains readily available to receive and reprocess instruments between cases.


Testing

  • Ensures all instrumentation entering the department from outside the facility is processed according to current standards, and facility policies.

Instrumentation

  • Maintains and stores sterilized instrumentation appropriately in a systematic manner, following industry standards and facility policy.
  • Wraps, inventories, and manages backup instruments and equipment.
  • Supplies are stored on shelving following first in/first out method.
  • Shelves must be emptied before cleaning begins.
  • Storage shelves must be cleaned using an approved disinfectant agent.
  • Surfaces must be thoroughly dried with a lint-free towel to avoid contamination of supplies.
  • Supplies are placed back on shelf in their proper order.


Documentation

  • Maintains accurate, up to date Instrumentation lists.
  • Maintains accurate, up to date Instrument Tray cards.
  • Retains all sterilization records, according to regulations.
