Construction Estimator
Expected Salary: $115,000 - $130,000 per year

The Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing bids and proposals, estimating project schedules, assessing labor needs, performing material and equipment quantity takeoffs, determining project risks, calculating cost estimates, and preparing technical documentation for construction projects. The Construction Estimator will forecast the cost, size, and duration of future construction projects by collecting and analyzing data and preparing detailed cost reports and budgets. Following project award, the Construction Estimator will assist Project Managers in developing project schedules, creating Bills of Materials (BOMs), directing procurement, selecting and coordinating vendors, and other preconstruction activities.
Duties and Responsibilities / Essential Functions
  • Review project plans, specifications, and drawings to understand the scope of work, regulatory requirements, and contractual requirements.
  • Communicate with clients to understand their needs and provide cost-effective solutions, including by the generation of questions and requests for information (RFIs).
  • Gather information on materials, labor, and equipment prices from vendors and suppliers.
  • Develop labor resource estimates (resource loading).
  • Estimate the cost of materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractors.
  • Develop comprehensive cost estimates and budgets.
  • Develop construction sequences and proposed schedules, including phasing plans.
  • Analyze project risk.
  • Prepare detailed cost reports for bids and proposals.
  • Ensure all estimates are accurate, thorough, and align with project specifications and requirements.
  • Identify potential cost over-runs and provide mitigation plans.
  • Research historical data and trends for accurate cost forecasting.
  • Utilize cost estimation software and tools.
  • Prepare and present cost estimation reports to stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain tools to create historical estimate tracking for use in analyzing future work.

Skills / Specifications
  • In-depth knowledge of construction materials, methods, and industry standards.
  • Demonstrable analytical and mathematical skills as relevant to cost estimation.
  • Practiced organizational skills with focus on details.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in estimation software including Bluebeam, RSMeans, and PlanSwift.
  • Proficiency in scheduling software including Primivera P6, and Microsoft Project.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position does not require the supervision of direct reports.
Work Environment
This position operates in a professional office using standard office equipment, in warehouses, and on construction sites using standard tools of the trade.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work for prolonged periods of time sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Lifting of up to 25 lbs. may occur.
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. Standard days and hours are 40 hours per week, with weekends and extended hours as needed.Ability to work flexible hours including nights, holidays, and weekends is required based on business needs.
Travel
Occasional travel may be required.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as an estimator within the construction industry.
Work Authorization / Security Clearance
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a federal government security clearance.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US.
  • Successfully pass pre-employment (post offer) background check.
  • Successful pass pre-employment (post offer) drug test and motor vehicle record review.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
