Job Description
The ED MEDIC under the direction of a licensed professional nurse performs care appropriate to the patient population served and meets daily routine patient care needs. The ED MEDIC also assists nursing staff by transporting patients running errands and transporting equipment to and from units as requested. Additional job functions may be assigned per certification level and competencies. The ED MEDIC functions under the direction of a licensed professional nurse. Under the supervision of the nurse paramedics perform care appropriate to the patient population served and meet daily routine patient care needs. The ED MEDIC performs all the duties of the EMT-B and EMT-E. In addition the paramedic inserts peripheral IV therapy or saline lock after successful completion of an inservice and at the reaction of a registered nurse. He/she assists with airway maintenance as needed. The ED MEDIC monitors cardiac rhythms and immediately reports changes. He/she performs phlebotomy after successful completion of a phlebotomy inservice and at the direction of a registered nurse. He/she continually monitors patient's status and correctly intervenes when indicated. The paramedic may perform suctioning and/or insert an oral airway during a code situation if ACLS certified and upon approval by the E.D. staff Educator. The paramedic may not perform advanced medical airway management (e.g., intubation). He/she may provide the ALS measures of defibrillation if ACLS certified under the direction of a physician or an ACLS registered nurse.
Responsibilities
Assists nursing staff in gathering patient data
Assists unit staff in answering calls ordering and procuring supplies or equipment and requesting services
Communicates patient's response to plan of care and changes in patient's condition to appropriate staff
Demonstrates ability to prioritize multiple tasks to accomplish work assignments in a timely manner
Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team
Demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age, spiritual, and cultural needs of the patient served
Documents care and treatments provided to patient
Ensures all equipment is working properly. Seeks repairs and maintenance as situations arise
Ensures each pod is properly stocked with necessary supplies and equipment
Maintains a clean and safe environment keeping patient areas neat and hallways clear
Maintains required certifications and all skills competencies. Recertifies within required timeline to maintain employment
Maintains strict confidentiality of patient information
Other duties that may be assigned from time to time
Participates in and supports ongoing quality improvement activities of the hospital/nursing unit
Participates in continuing education and job-related services obtaining a minimum of hours of continuing education each year
Remains current in new procedures and equipment
Remains in assigned area unless needed for other department emergencies
Reports to on-coming staff pertinent information relating to patients and supplies
Responds to organizational emergency situations as required
Responds to patient requests for assistance promptly
Transports patients to in-patient units in a safe and competent manner
Utilizes proper body mechanics in moving turning and transporting patients and materials
Qualifications
Required Education: High School Diploma / GED
Preferred Education: Nursing assistant course or courses in emergency field. Associates Degree
Preferred Experience: Previous emergency department or pre-hospital provider experience
Required Certifications and Licensures: Virginia EMT-Paramedic Certification
