Wellness/Health Writer

The reporter is a key position for the Health Team and will be expected to write stories on a variety of wellness topics. Stories they produce must be engaging and understandable for a general audience and should be of high enough quality to lead the homepage or appear on A1. The position might also contribute reporting on standard Health topics, as required.
Wellness topics will be defined by the Health Team editor but would include routine health care needs from professionals, along with diet, exercise, mental health issues and self care.
The position will be expected to produce daily wellness content, in addition to contributing to or writing breaking stories when a wellness issue comes into play in a local or national news story. The writer will also be asked to produce occasional short-term enterprise stories that are more deeply reported or consumer/watchdog in nature. In addition, this reporting position will be asked as needed to write on general assignment topics related to health.
The reporter is expected to ensure stories are accurate and balanced, with voices representing all sides of divisive issues surrounding health topics. The reporter is expected to file breaking news quickly for digital readers.
This reporter will generate their own story ideas and develop sources in the medical and wellness fields. The reporter should understand how to locate the right health data and medical studies and be able to utilize data in an understandable way in stories.
The reporter is expected to conceive and drive requests for graphics, photo and video to accompany their work and make their stories more engaging.
*Reporter will be part of a weekend rotation and may be asked to work Saturday and/or Sunday a few weekends out of the year.
Job Duties and Tasks
  • Writes daily stories on Wellness topics suitable for use on ajc.com homepage
  • Uses story metrics to determine which topics are of interest to the readers of ajc.com and works to serve those interests.
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize news and to obtain context needed to explain health concepts to a general audience.
  • Generates clean and concise copy that does not need extensive editing.
  • Has a clear understanding of libel law; flags potential legal issues when necessary; reflects fairness and balance in all reports.
  • Consistently meets deadlines set for digital and print needs.
  • Adheres to our newsroom's reporting ethics guidelines
Position Requirements
  • Education: College degree preferred.
  • Experience: With a bachelor's degree, 4+ years of professional journalism/media experience required. Candidates may alternatively have a master's degree with 2+ years of experience, a Ph.D. and up to a year of experience or 8 years of experience with no degree.
Any candidate needs to:
  • Display a clear understanding of source development and beat maintenance.
  • Wellness and health beat experience strongly preferred
  • Display a clear ability to develop strong, reader-focused story ideas and write about complex concepts with clarity and authority.
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet and database programs a plus, but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to be highly organized and, when warranted, manage and juggle multiple stories simultaneously.
  • Must have strong skills in communicating and collaborating with editors and colleagues.
  • Capacity to shoot own photographs when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in digital media.
  • Proven record of time management and productivity to succeed in a remote work environment required.
  • Excellent communication skills with a collaborative attitude.
  • Permanent residence in metro Atlanta required and, although, this position allow hybrid, remote working there will be days where you'll be expected to be in the AJC office.
  • Reliable home internet service required.
  • Local travel required. Therefore, a successful candidate will need a reliable vehicle to cover the news.

USD 70,700.00 - 106,100.00 per year
Compensation:
Compensation includes a base salary of $70,700.00 - $106,100.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.
