A truck driver also may operate auxiliary equipment which is a part of the truck or special auxiliary equipment that is attached such as snow plows or salt and sand spreaders. May be assigned to drive and operate other motorized, light equipment (farm tractors, cherry pickers, small street sweepers, etc.) associated with public services and public utility work projects (roadways, rights-of-way, sewers, water distribution, etc.) in order to assist in the timely maintenance and repair of these and other related facilities. Performs related work as required. Minimum Qualifications (KSAs) (Illustrative only. Knowledge of: The State of Ohio and the City of Cincinnati traffic rules and regulations sufficient to operate a truck on the alleys, roadways, and highways. The maintenance and pre-operational checks that are performed on truck prior to operation, during operation, and after operation sufficient to maintain the truck in a safe and operating condition. How to drive a truck under various road conditions such as wet or snow-covered streets and highways. Cincinnati and surrounding area streets sufficient to drive to assigned work area, to storage areas, and to suppliers. How a truck and how auxiliary equipment operates when there is an equipment breakdown (for example, loss of air pressure, a leak in a hydraulic line, locked brakes, etc.) sufficient to know when to stop the truck or to stop operating the attached equipment and to explain the breakdown to the proper person. Proper methods of distributing a load onto a truck. Actions, or lack of actions, while one is driving and operating a truck which will cause abuse to the equipment. Defensive driving techniques sufficient to operate a truck safely in the performance of the job. Safety policies and procedures, e.g. Employee Safety Instruction Manual and applicable agency requirements. Skill to: Drive and operate a truck along alleys, roadways, and private driveways in a safe manner and in accordance with the laws of Ohio and Cincinnati, and the rules and regulations of the division and department. Perform routine maintenance tasks such as fueling, adding oil, putting air in tires, etc. Operate auxiliary equipment (power take-off, dump controls, etc.) on truck to either load onto or to unload materials or equipment off truck. Ability to: Hear unusual engine noises and other noises on truck sufficiently to recognize potential or existing mechanical problems. Be able to read a street guide. Be courteous to public. Follow oral instructions. Follow written instructions. Read sufficiently to understand written directives from assigned division or department and to understand any training materials. Complete all report forms such as "trouble" (equipment breakdown) forms, accident reports, daily reports, etc. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: (Illustrative only. Any one position within this classification may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all of the tasks which may be performed.) Drives a heavy truck to acquire materials or equipment from a stockpile or a supplier; transports materials and equipment to a work site; hauls dirt, rocks, asphalt, or concrete from an excavation site to a dumpsite; and performs related types of hauling. Performs a "pre-operation" safety maintenance check on the assigned equipment before beginning day's assigned work by a physical and visual inspection in accordance with the guidelines of the division checklist and in conformance with the policies of the assigned division to insure that the equipment is in a safe and working order. When not driving a truck, performs heavy or unskilled manual labor when assisting a crew assigned to a work project in order to help in the timely completion of the work project. During periods of snow, drives a heavy truck to plow snow from roadways and/or to spread salt, sand, and chemicals on roadways to melt snow in order to keep roadways clear. Working knowledge of current safety policies, instructions for proper usage, and other procedures and professional practices required for completing job duties. Identifies unsafe practices and conditions and brings such matters to the attention of the crew leader or supervisor. Required Education and Experience (RESUME AND DRIVERS LICENSE MUST BE ATTACHED OR APPLICATION WILL BE REJECTED) PROMOTIONAL: Each applicant must have completed one year of satisfactory permanent classified experience with the City of Cincinnati as a Laborer, Utility Laborer, Cleaner, Sanitation Helper, Automotive Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic Crew Chief, or Utility Technician. OPEN: Each applicant must have one year of commercial driving experience. Additionally, each applicant must have a Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B). OTHER REQUIREMENTS Must have a valid Driver's License. Some promotional positions may require a Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B). Must be willing to work shifts or irregular work hours, including weekends and holidays. Must have physical strength to perform manual labor and ability to climb into and out of ditches and confined spaces. Must be able to perform heavy or unskilled manual labor when assisting a crew assigned to a work project. MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATION Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations. ADDITIONAL EXAM INFORMATION: Exam Scoring: The passing score will be determined after the examination by the Civil Service Examiner together with the Civil Service Secretary. Determination of passing score will be based on the job analysis and the examination results in consultation with subject matter experts and/or other professional methods. Credit for Military Service: Special credit for honorable military service is given (1) who successfully complete all portions of the testing process, and (2) who provide Human Resources a long-form copy of your DD-214 confirming an honorable discharge (Character of Service Box 24 on DD-214).
