Role Overview

The Packaging Set Up Mechanic is responsible for set ups and maintenance tasks on assigned production lines to ensure its smooth operation. The Packaging Mechanic must be knowledgeable about each individual component of a packaging line, understand the correct set up and connection between components, and complete a set up/changeover within the expected time. The person must be capable of operating multiple like machines at one time and learning to operate a variety of equipment within the packaging area. Machines could include bottle unscrambler, electronic tablet counter, slat filler, cottoned, capper, heat sealer, labeler, neck bander, heat shrink tunnel, pack off table, accumulation table, cartoner, QR code printers, and dust collectors.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Perform moderate to complex adjustments, maintenance, and repairs to packaging and pneumatic equipment.
  • Perform changeover and set-up of packaging machines as well as troubleshoot mechanical and basic electrical systems and make appropriate repairs to machines.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance on plant equipment such as packaging equipment, conveyors, and compressors.
  • Assist on equipment installations within the plant structure. Complete work orders to repair machinery.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals to perform required maintenance and service.
  • Diagnose problems, replace, or repair parts, test and adjust.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools, electric meters, and material handling equipment in performing duties.
  • Set up full line configurations of multiple pieces of equipment, independently.
  • Detect faulty operations, defective material, and report those and any unusual situations to proper supervision.
  • Ensures full compliance with Company policies, procedures, GMP’s, Ethical Business Practice, and SOP’s at all times. Ensures documentation such as operation logs, batch records, etc. are fully completed, signed and in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures that product meets applicable quality standards. This includes inspection for quality during operation and performing all required sampling and testing.
  • Guides and coaches Packaging Operators in the safe and effective operation of packaging line machines. This includes training to set assist with breakdown and cleaning /sanitation of the machine parts and components.
  • Maintain proper gowning and hygiene to ensure integrity of the product as per company policies.
  • Follows all safety rules and procedures and observes the operations to insure a safe environment.
  • Assists with other mechanical or maintenance needs of the building as required.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Works extended hours and occasional weekend overtime.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education & Qualification:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • 2+ years in packaging mechanics
  • Minimum of one (2) year work experience in nutritionals, supplements, food, or pharmaceutical manufacturing industries

Skills & Ability

  • Demonstrates ability to work in a team and assist others.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and where necessary complete items including a blueprint, an electrical schematic, operating and maintenance manuals, a work order, repair parts request, standard and metric tape measure, and other measuring equipment including a micrometer, a caliper, scale and VOM (Volt/Ohm Meter).
  • Able to follow written instructions precisely and perform basic math calculations as required.
  • Understands and is knowledgeable of cGMP, OSHA standards etc.
  • Mechanically inclined to understand inner workings of equipment, must be able to disassemble, repair and troubleshoot machines.
  • Demonstrates the ability to read and write basic English in order to be able to understand the industry regulated instruction sheets.
  • PLC is a plus
  • General PC proficiency

Physical Requirements (lifting, etc.):

  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.; occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must stand and walk on production floor a minimum of 6 hours per shift
  • Uses hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects or controls, lifting to waist height and/or above shoulder height, frequent bending from waist, or squatting, walking short distances.
  • Occasionally works from a rolling ladder or step stool, must be able to lean over equipment as well as kneeling on the floor to clean under the equipment.
  • Must be able wear all PPE including lab coat, face mask, booties, gloves, safety glasses/goggles and respirators.

Work Environment (Office, Warehouse, temperature extremes, etc.):

  • Work is regularly performed inside a manufacturing environment where temperatures can be moderate, exposure to dust, odors, noise, and fumes. The noise level is usually moderate. Employee can be exposed daily to chemicals and cleaning agents.
