Title: Laboratory Technician - Microbiology

Location: Lansing, MI - State of Michigan Laboratory

Purpose: This position functions as a laboratory technician in the Microbiology section, specifically the tuberculosis, and media units of the Michigan Department of Health and Human services, Bureau of labs. This position will be responsible for performing technical and paraprofessional clinical laboratory work necessary to accomplish the mission of the microbiology section on a day-to-day basis. This work supports the diagnosis of human disease through bacteriological examination of isolates from blood, sputum, feces, urine, tissues, and environmental samples associated with human disease. As a paraprofessional, this position processes specimens for bacterial and mycobacterial analysis. This position is responsible for preparation of reagents and media in support of testing. This requires knowledge of sterile techniques, safe laboratory practices, and analytical methods. Autoclave sterilization of waste and media, along with preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment are also main functions of this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duty 1 - 75% of time

  • Handle, process, and set up specimens for tuberculosis (TB) culture.This requires work in a BSL3 laboratory and includes specimen decontamination and concentration, inoculating media, smear preparation, and staining.
  • Assist in freezing back tuberculosis isolates related to the National Tuberculosis Surveillance Center.
  • Assist in preparing chemical reagents, autoclaving, operating, and maintaining testing instruments within the tuberculosis unit.

Duty 2 - 10% of time

  • Provide support to the media unit through preparation of plated media, liquid media and biochemical reagents to promote the growth and aid in the identification of bacterial strains.
  • Maintain records of reagent and media production.

Duty 3 - 10% of time

  • Follow all quality control and quality assurance procedures that are in place in the microbiology section.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, perform preventive maintenance and documentation, prepare non-conforming event reports, and participate in continuing education activities.

Duty 4 - 5% of time

  • Other work-related duties as required by management such as laboratory cleaning, inventory and stocking supplies.
  • Participate in studies and research activities.
  • Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Associate or bachelor's degree in microbiology, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Molecular Biology, or Biological Sciences.

Experience: At least one year of clinical laboratory experience is preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: An employee working with specimens of human origin is required to employ "universal precautions" in the laboratory utilizing personal protection devices such as gloves, safety glasses, and lab coats to prevent contamination. Repetitive pipetting, walking, standing, bending, and lifting (limited to less than 40 pounds). Requires working for extended periods of time in a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) while wearing a full-length gown, eye protection, N-95 respirator or CAPR, and nitrile gloves. Works with incubators, water baths, chemical fume hoods and steam autoclaves. The ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
