JOB SUMMARY

Performs skilled mechanical work in the service, maintenance, repair and modification of a wide range of City heavy and automotive equipment. Work is performed on large and small licensed and non-licensed equipment, small motors, compressors and related property. Work is at the advanced apprentice to journeyman level, with growth on the job expected.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs skilled mechanical work on assigned City equipment including, but not limited to trucks, cars, tractors, loaders, backhoes, graders, bulldozers, fire trucks, ambulances, generator sets and similar automotive and mechanical equipment.
  • Assists fellow workers with equipment repair and will oversee the work of automotive servicemen or less trained mechanical personnel.
  • Works with air conditioning systems, auto body repair and painting, major engine rebuilding, major and minor tune-ups, clutch removal and replacement, valve jobs, fuel systems, steering gear work, tire repairs, repair of large and small motors and pumps including such things as portable generators, fire pumps and equipment, generator sets with computer controls and 6, 12 and 24 volt electrical systems.
  • Works on both two (2) and four (4) wheel drive vehicles.
  • Utilizes all automotive service equipment and tools including electronic testing equipment.
  • Performs Tig, Mig, gas and arc welding tasks as required.
  • Assists in all shop related duties, including but not limited to inventory, records and related housekeeping items and will perform a wide variety of related responsibilities as required or assigned.
  • Keeps records of repairs and services performed.
  • Orders parts and supplies as needed from catalogs and/or local suppliers.
  • Ensures shop and work areas are clean and safe.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED; and
  • Completion of an approved auto mechanics training school, heavy equipment school, and completion of an approved apprenticeship in varied light and heavy auto mechanics is required;
  • Five (5) years of progressive experience in varied auto mechanical and heavy equipment work is normally required;
  • Apprenticeship time may be substituted for working experience if the candidate can demonstrate journeyman proficiency in several mechanical areas.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid State driver’s license upon employment.

Special Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to obtain an Arizona Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A and a valid medical within six (6) months of notification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the workings of a wide variety of mechanical equipment and the ability to repair same is a must.
  • Knowledge of mechanical parts, electrical systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, clutch systems, valve systems, carburetor systems, steering gear systems, transmissions, brakes, scope analysis systems, and related mechanical and electrical systems is a must.
  • Knowledge in the use of computers and associated word processing and database usage is desirable.
  • Knowledge in both Tig and Mig welding as it pertains to repair and maintenance is desired.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions involved in the everyday activities related to work with hand and power tools, equipment and vehicles in a repair and construction environment involving water, sewer, electrical, confined spaces, traffic and a variety of municipal structures and facilities.
  • Skill in performing complex mechanical functions with no supervision and will assist in training mechanical personnel of lesser responsibility.
  • Skill in the operation of motor vehicles must meet minimum state standards such as vision, hearing, depth perception, etc.
  • Skill in the operation of various types of construction equipment including but not limited to: front loader, backhoe, tractor, trencher and related equipment. Operation of emergency equipment including but not limited to: fire/rescue equipment and generator sets. Hand and power tools, pneumatic, electrical and gasoline operated associated with maintenance and repair work in the equipment maintenance field.
  • Ability to operate a range of vehicles from standard passenger car to construction type equipment including dump trucks, water trucks and various cargo vehicles.
  • Ability to demonstrate good written and oral communication skills in the English language
  • Ability to read and interpret basic policy, equipment and plan document instructions with acceptable comprehension levels to perform steps described in written materials.
  • Ability to provide clear, detailed written and/or verbal instructions to other employees on work assignments.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision on a wide variety of jobs relating to both heavy and light equipment is essential.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other departments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain supervisory relationship with subordinates.
  • Ability to plan and direct crew operations after analyzing and implementing safety procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, stooping, and talking, visual acuity and walking.
