GPE- Black Hole Bar Assistant Supervisor

JOB SUMMARY
This position is an Assistant Supervisor for the Black Hole Bar and a member of the Black Hole
Operations Team. Responsible for the daily running of the Black Hole Bar, its infrastructure and
resources. Oversees the bar’s daily needs by working directly with the bar leads and works directly with
the Black Hole Social Coordinator for event programming within the Black Hole Bar. Reports directly to
the Black Hole Bar Supervisor. The Black Hole Bar Assistant Supervisor Evening is an overnight
position.

This is a temporary, full-time, Exempt role, based in Black Rock City, Nevada running from August to
September, 2024.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operations (75%)
● Keeping records of bar stock before, during and after the event.
● Manage supply lines of ice and water within GP&E's departmental allotments.
● Overseeing volunteer bar staffing schedule.
● Responsible for development and implementation of bar manual, as well as training of bar staff and
volunteers on best practices.
● Allocating bar resources at the various points of the event cycle.
● Working with other Assistant Bar Supervisor to keep the bar adequately stocked and serviced.
● Works closely with Black Hole Operations Manager on any infrastructure needs, inclusive of power
and plumbing, etc.
● Responsible for bar’s Leave No Trace policy.
● Work directly with Black Hole Social Coordinator in facilitating daily content and event
scheduling, inclusive of Opening Night Festivities and the Gate Party.
● Ensure the bar is adequately prepared and secured for the winter off-season.
● Ensure the bar remains in compliance with all Nevada, and Event Health Codes as well as all
state, local and federal ABC regulations.
● Works collaboratively with other Burning Man departments as necessary to meet deadlines and
improve processes.
● Maintain strong relationships across organizational departments to ensure cohesion with GP&E
processes and needs.
● Develop and maintain good working relationships with GP&E staff and volunteers to foster a
better Manager/Employee/Volunteer work environment.
Facilities Support (20%)
● Assist with load in/out of tools and materials, furniture arrangement or repair, decor,
and equipment in the Black Hole Social House.
● Work with Bar Supervisors and leads for any damages or broken equipment and report
to management as necessary.

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)
● Work with the team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for the Black
Hole Operations Camping Pod.
● Adjust to and implement COVID protocols as directed.
● Attend and support crew attendance to all relevant meetings.
● Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while
proactively addressing any concerns with management.
● Perform other duties as assigned.

LEARNING AND TEACHING
● Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation
related to their assigned duties.
● Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and
business processes.
● Training development - Collaborates with the bar management team to train and develop
volunteer staff
● Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on
emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED
● 3 years experience with GP&E and/or 2 years real-world bar experience
● 21 years or older
● Experience working in Gate, Perimeter and Exodus operations
● Ability to work cross departmentally and maintain solid inter-departmental relationships
● Ability to represent GP&E as the purveyor of the Black Hole Bar
● Strong leadership skills and ability to work well with a wide range of people
● Ability to think clearly, problem solve and remain calm under high pressure situations
● Significant knowledge and experience within the Burning Man organization and community
● Dedicated to Standards of Behavior and principles and ethics of the Burning Man organization
● Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada
● Valid driver’s license and able to be insured by Burning Man.

PREFERRED
● Experience running a busy bar / social house at a major theme or staff camp

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
● Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

COMPENSATION:
Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and
geographical location. The anticipated pay rate for this position is $800 per week.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
● On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This
position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and
endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who
may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of
transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to
fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
