JOB SUMMARY
The Emergency Room Technician is responsible for assisting emergency department staff with patient care and clerical duties.
Reporting Structure: Reports to the Charge Nurse and/or ER Supervisor/Manager
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education
High School diploma or equivalency. Some medical training preferred such as CNA training, MA training, or successful completion of the cognitive and psychomotor exam for the National Registry of EMTs at a Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic level is required.
Work Experience
Some work experience (one year recent ER experience) as ER Technician preferred.Students in an accredited nursing education program. Student must have successfully completed fundamental clinical skills portion of the program (1st semester of clinicals).
License/Certification
Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Professionals (BLS) certification
EMT, CNA or MA certification required

JOB SPECIFIC CORE COMPETENCIES

Functional knowledge of medical terminology, software and hardware related to data and ordering systems preferred.
Knowledge of ER processes, concepts and equipment
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supports the ER registered nurses and licensed practical nurses in a hospital emergency department in order to provide the highest quality patient care.
Answers phones.
Cleans, inspects, and sets up emergency rooms, carts, and equipment.
Orders and replenishes supplies as needed.
Provides wound care and assists with splints, slings, casts, and crutches.
Measures and documents vital signs, performs EKGs, and collects lab samples.
Responds to call lights and preps patients for physicians.
Assists with patient transfers and discharge
Assists with insurance approvals for transport
Documents patient information
Makes discharge phone calls
Maintains a clean and safe environment
Documents patient information
Rounds on patients as directed
OTHER DUTIES
May perform administrative obligations, other duties, and special project work as required and/or directed by the ED Director or charge nurse.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Prolonged periods of standing and walking
Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 40 pounds during a scheduled work shift.
Must be able to see with corrective eye wear
Must be able to hear clearly with assistance
May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases
Able to handle emergency and/or crisis situations
May be required to wear protective equipment as necessary
Transferring, repositioning patients.
Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching for patient care functions.
Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment.
Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests including random and reasonable suspicion drug screens.
