Design Engineer

Summary:
The Design Engineer performs the A to Z development of automotive drivetrain products. Position responsibilities include the development of new products and expansion of current product lines.
Responsibilities:

  • Create detailed Engineering drawings, solid models, and assemblies in SolidWorks.
  • Organize & maintain drawing vault, current revisions & Solidworks original documents.
  • Qualify first article samples and define test methods for production process verification.
  • Work closely with the production team to quickly resolve any problems, make product improvements, and improve production efficiency.
  • Improve existing products by analyzing failed parts and providing ideas for improvements.
  • Further develop the Quality program, inspection requirements & documentation.
  • Determine test requirements for new products & analyze test data to determine if the product meets design requirements.
  • Work directly with suppliers to ensure that key design requirements are being met and resolve any manufacturing issues.
  • Benchmark existing products in the marketplace to ensure that designs are the best in the industry.
  • Review new vehicle platforms as they are released to come up with new and improved aftermarket drivetrain solutions.
  • Work closely with other company units & customers to co-develop new products.
  • Perform market research to help identify new product opportunities.
  • Review Engineering drawings for accuracy of tolerances, material selection, and fitment within design parameters.
  • Update management on project progression during frequent meetings and adjust priorities based on feedback.
  • Occasional travel required to meet with suppliers, customers & partner companies.
  • Capable of lifting/carrying 20 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs.; some physical activity required.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, with at least 5 years of design experience.
  • 3D Solid modeling experience, and/or SolidWorks experience required.
  • Strong Product Development experience with a focus on automotive aftermarket products.
  • Experience in sheet metal design, bracketry & weldments is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with QA/QC inspection equipment, including basic measurement tools, micrometers, height gages, thread gages, and dial indicators. Romer or Faro arm experience preferred.
  • Experience with Mechanical drafting standards, ANSI standards, and document control. PDM experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with FEA or Simulation preferred.

  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple assignments at any given time while maintaining commitment to deadlines.

  • Understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and assembly tolerances.
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacturing.
  • Proficient computer skills including MS Office Suite and Outlook required.
  • Understanding of metal production materials and heat treatment processes including experience with laser cutting and bending.
  • Understanding of Metallurgy and Heat Treatment and ability to apply knowledge in designs.
  • Expected to adhere to safe work practices and general safety rules to ensure employee and customer safety and high quality of work.
  • Experience with basic hand tools and fitment testing methods, mechanically inclined.
  • Ability to interface with customers and suppliers.
