Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Temporary Library Aide is an employee of the Kenai Community Library working under the direction of the Library Director. This position performs a wide variety of general library work in public, clerical and/or technical services to assist patrons with daily operational needs of the Library, including but not limited to circulation, shelving, processing and copy cataloging of library materials, technology support, and programming. The Library Aide must have a strong customer service philosophy and a commitment to excellence in library service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform circulation and customer service activities at the main service desk, including but not limited to checking out library materials, registering patrons for library cards, assisting patrons in resolving account issues, placing holds for patrons, and answering the telephone. Answer reference and reader's advisory questions or refer those which cannot be easily answered to other staff. Assist patrons with online catalogs, databases, computers, photocopiers, and other library equipment & resources. Provide basic technology troubleshooting support to patrons. Assist patrons in locating materials. Open and close the Library building or assist with this function. Check-in, sort, and shelve returned library materials. Inspect materials for damage when returned and repair damage. Prepare new materials for checkout. Assist with library programs and displays, as needed. Produce publicity materials for Library events, as required. Assist with the volunteer program. Serve as backup and perform duties for other personnel such as interlibrary loan, reading programs, and technical support. Maintain a friendly, helpful, and professional manner. Establish and maintain effective, cooperative, and courteous working relationships with colleagues, organizations, City employees, and the general public. Attend staff meetings and continuing education programs as requested. Understand, follow and enforce library policies and procedures. Maintain strict confidentiality of privileged communications and information and comply with privacy laws and regulations. Errors in judgment could substantially impact the Library's resources and public acceptance of programs, protection of patron confidentiality, personnel, and facilities. Perform tasks with minimal or no supervision and complete projects independently within established time frames and with constant interruptions. Maintain regular, reliable, and predictable attendance at work. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of work experience in customer service. Must be available to work varying schedules, including weekends, holidays, and evenings. The applicant (or employee after hire) may be subject to background investigations, including but not limited to a criminal background check. Supplemental Information

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Applicable college coursework or work experience in a public library setting. Demonstrated competence in using library technology, computers, and office equipment. WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is typically in an indoor office and community room setting, adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. The Aide works mostly during the daytime but occasionally is required to work at night and during the weekend.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers dexterously (e.g., operate computers, telephones, photocopiers, keyboards, scanners, and other general office equipment); to communicate orally in person and on the telephone; is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, crouch, bend, lift, and reach with hands and arms; and to push carts loaded with books. The employee must occasionally exert up to 40 pounds of force, including lifting boxes of books, and must occasionally use step ladders up to 2-3 feet in height. Specific vision abilities required include color, close, and peripheral vision. The employee must be able to hear and to talk and to communicate verbally in-person as well as on a telephone.

This is a temporary position created to supplement the City's workforce for a pre-established period of not more than eighteen (18) weeks. The position is excluded from participation in the State Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS) and ineligible for City-sponsored benefits, including medical and hospital insurance, annual leave, holiday pay.
