The Controller is primarily responsible for the management and direction of all operational functions involved with the processing, accounting, and reporting of financial transactions of the organization. As a member of the leadership team, this position manages personnel in these areas to ensure the timely and accurate accounting and reporting of financial data. The scope of the responsibility includes general accounting, tax compliance, accounts payable, purchasing, cashiering services, treasury services, financial reporting, enrollment, and financial systems control. Additionally, this position provides expertise to the VP of Finance and Accounting and executive-level staff on external regulations, compliance, internal financial operations, and matters pertaining to the financial operations of the organization.


*Essential Functions:*
* Manage and direct the work of department professionals involved with all aspects of financial transactions, including accounting and financial reporting functions. Ensure that the staff operates efficiently and accurately and always displays excellent collaboration and communication.
* Implement, monitor, and control the approved fiscal policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with best accounting practices for early childhood educational institutions within the framework of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Generally Accepted Auditing Standards, and federal OMB.
* Coordinate and oversee the annual external audit, the single audit over federal or grant awards, and provide support for the annual benefit plan audits.
* Coordinate and audit the monthly and annual close of the organization’s books; prepare and review the monthly and yearly financial statements, participate in and review the production of the interim and year-end audit schedules and work papers.
* Coordinate with external auditors, tax preparers and consultants to ensure timely and accurate reporting and filings.
* Prepare for and support the Board’s Audit and Finance Committee meetings as needed and as directed by the Deputy Director for Accounting and Finance.
* Provide training and guidance to staff on technical accounting issues and methods.
* Interact with the organization’s community to determine service and financial information needs.
* Work closely with the organization’s Budget and Contract teams on financial planning, forecasting, and operational requirements to ensure timely and accurate reporting that complies with the state rules and regulations.
* Special projects including financial reporting and analysis and participation in the development and innovation of financial management tools.
* Ensure the financial system and all supporting systems are monitored and integrated efficiently to support accounting and reporting.
* In the absence of the Deputy Director of Accounting and Finance, is the acting deputy for the department
* Develops accounting policies and procedures to support effective business operations, is a key stakeholder in integration, and provides guidance and advice on operational strategies, performance metrics, and financial challenges and opportunities to support organizational growth
* Drive strategic financial leadership with oversight and an innovative mindset to design and protect the integrity of the organization
* Other duties as assigned


*Education - Minimum requirements for the position*
* BA/BS in Accounting or Finance or equivalent required
* Preferred: Professional designations of CPA, CMA, CGMA, or CFA
* Preferred: MBA is highly desirable.

*Experience - Minimum relevant experience necessary to qualify for the position*
* Minimum of 8 to 10 years’ experience in accounting at a professional level.
* Minimum of 5 to 7 years in supervision or management of an accounting team.
* Experience working with non-profit is a big plus.

* Excellent technical knowledge and working proficiency of accounting standards.
* Proficiency in financial statement compilation and presentation.
* Proficiency in large ERP systems.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, online systems required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $121,887.00 - $182,831.00 per year
