Description
St. Croix Health is currently seeking a full-time (0.75 FTE) Charge Nurse to work 12-hour straight night shifts (7 pm - 7:30 am), including every 3rd weekend and holiday.
The Charge Nurse is responsible for coordinating the operations of the unit, under guidance of the Supervisor, Manager, and/or House Supervisor. The Charge Nurse will lead the team in a professional manner, in accordance with hospital policy, to ensure the highest quality of care and promote positive outcomes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the condition of patients under their charge, recognize changes in patient condition, implement appropriate interventions, continuity of care, and patient safety
  • Conform to all regulatory guidelines, ensure adherence to the facility's policies, and maintain compliance with standards of practice and ethics
  • Deescalate potentially volatile situations involving patients or co-workers
  • Delegate unit and patient responsibilities to nursing staff based on each staff member's level of competence
  • Report concerns about patient care, the work environment, or co-worker performance to the Supervisor or Manager in a timely fashion
  • Educate nursing staff regarding the use of all equipment and supplies, safe patient handling techniques, safety procedures, and infection control
  • Record nursing notes, chart admission and discharge dates, and participate in unit staffing, code rounds, and morbidity and mortality conferences
  • Supervision of staff, assign duties during downtime and address patient care needs.
  • Serve as point person for daily unit communication needs such as staff assignments, face to face communication, trouble shooting and problem resolution for day-to-day issues that arise in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Initiate consultation, as needed, based on problem/issue.
  • Lead daily huddle and summarize discussion. Assure distribution to those not in attendance.
  • Identifies and addresses patient and staff safety issues, communicating concerns to appropriate management personnel.
  • Work to diffuse situations causing distress or concern for staff, clinicians and/or patient. Communicate situations to Supervisor, Manager, or House Supervisor for any needed follow-up.
Requirements
Education & Licensure:
  • Associate's in Nursing required; BSN preferred
  • Current WI Registered Nurse license
Certifications:
  • BLS required at time of hire
  • ACLS required within six months of hire
Experience:
  • 1-3 years of experience as acute care Registered Nurse
  • ICU experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with little direction and manage multiple demands and priorities
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
  • Providing personal assistance, medical attention, emotional support, or other personal care to others such as coworkers, customers, or patients.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and reaching
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
