Two major roles: one is directed at assembly and maintenance of the equipment, second role focuses on patient care. Technicians combine patient and equipment care responsibilities. The timely and accurate assembly of dialysis equipment is vital in any dialysis program. Ongoing maintenance of costly equipment is highly valued element of a dialysis program. Technicians work with all the members of the dialysis team. Patient care activities are delegated and supervised by a Registered Nurse.
POSITION EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS :
¨ High School diploma/GED preferred.
¨ CertifiedHemodialysis Technician (CHT) Certification required
¨ One ( 1 ) year continuous experience preferred.
¨ Current CPR certification
¨ Good written and verbal communication skills required.
¨ Ability to read, write and speak English required
¨ Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians
JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE :
¨ Able to adjust and/or troubleshoot monitoring equipment, and computer equipment.
¨ Knowledge of mechanics and technological skills are essential for technicians who assume responsibility for equipment set-up and maintenance.
¨ An understanding of the principles of physics and computer technology are desirable.
¨ Interpersonal skills are necessary for good relations with patients and their families.
¨ They must have some understanding of human anatomy and physiology and the pathophysiology of ESRD.
¨ For patient safety, a technician also posses patient monitoring skills and clinical judgement.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES :
Patient Care:
¨ Actively participates directly with patient care and ensures a safe and comforting environment.
¨ Responds to patients' needs in a timely manner.
¨ Transports patients as needed.
¨ Welcomes patients and assist in the admission process.
¨ Performs/Assists with positioning patients and transferring patients from bed to chair or wheelchair or stretcher.
¨ Cleaning of stretchers/beds/chairs and assembling bed/chair/stretcher for the next patient.
¨ Perform the following only under the direction/supervision of an RN:
§ Monitor and document vital signs pre, intra and post dialysis and document on dialysis flow sheet, report when out of normal range/parameters.
¨ Establishes patient set-up/connection tasks including NIBP, SaO2 and EKG.
¨ Performs vital sign using a variety of equipment.
¨ Obtains basic patient information on new admission (out patient clinic, dialysis days, hepatitis status, dialysis access).
¨ Provide clinical duties as needed.
¨ Perform blood glucose monitoring.
¨ Assembles patient chart/flow sheets with appropriate labeling of all forms.
¨ Print and posts latest lab results.
¨ Prepares Chart Packets.
¨ Administer quality patient care in a considerate respectful manner.
¨ Termination/removal of fistula needles and proper disposal.
Equipment Care:
¨ Proper operation of Hemodialysis Machine (Fresenius 2008K, Fresenius 2008H).
¨ Proper operation of Millenium R. O. Systems.
¨ Testing for R. O. water hardness, chlorine/chloramines phoenix meter for PH and conductivity.
¨ Set-up and monitor dialysis machine and systems: observe dialysis machines and R. O. water systems for correct functioning, respond to visual and audible alarms and make appropriate adjustments pre, during and after the dialysis treatment.
¨ Ability to dismantle, clean and disinfect dialysis machines and equipment according to unit policy and procedures.
¨ Additional Responsibilities:
¨ Restocking-maintain appropriate level of supplies and forms. Report inventory and supply shortages.
¨ Maintain a neat, organized work area.
¨ Use resources in an efficient and cost effective manner.
¨ Participates in developing other staff.
¨ Attend in-services, staff meetings and patient care competencies, develop competencies.
¨ Participates in performance improvement utilization.
¨ Able to work overtime with little or no choice.
¨ Ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds, and able to perform repetitive standing, sitting, stooping walking, stretching, reaching and use full range of body motions.
¨ Understand and follow DHR patient and employee policy and procedure.
