Purpose of Position

Perform building inspections and enforce City of Oxford Code of Ordinances including construction site erosion matters.

The immediate supervisor for this position is the Building Official.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Communicate with citizens and contractors in a professional manner
  • Be able to apply City Code of Ordinances to all applicable situations and circumstances
  • Be knowledgeable of building, plumbing, fuel gas, mechanical and electrical codes
  • Make interpretations of ICC building codes
  • Inspect new and existing buildings
  • Inspect gas, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical construction
  • Make sure that building construction is in compliance with all applicable codes
  • Make sure building projects have permits
  • Coordinate with the Electrical Department on all new or altered buildings and new subdivisions
  • Answer code related questions for citizens, architects, engineers and developers
  • Check Erosion Control measures for compliance
  • Perform other duties as directed

  • Construction, plumbing, gas and electricity
  • Minimum inspection standards
  • State laws and City ordinances
  • Proper grammar and proper use of English in speaking and writing
  • OSHA standards and regulations concerning the work of the department
  • Federal and state statues concerning the work of the department
  • Mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication
  • General functions and operations of municipal government

Special Requirements

The person in this position must have a valid driver's license and be knowledgeable in the building, plumbing, mechanical and/or electrical field. In addition, a high school diploma or its equivalent is required. At least 5 years of experience in this or a related field is preferred. The candidate MUST have the ability to obtain ICC certification in one of the construction inspection elements within six (6) months of employment. The candidate MUST also attain a minimum of one (1) ICC inspection certification per year until the eight (8) core certifications are acquired. All certifications must be kept current via continuing education.

Computer, smartphone, iPad, facsimile, copier, digital camera, voltage meter, measuring tape and wheel, etc.

Physical Demands

The Building Inspector works regular hours year-round with infrequent overtime and occasional night work. There is no shift work for this position. The person in this position is not typically on call. Candidate must be able to tolerate extreme heat and cold. 30% of the work for this position is indoors, and 70% is outdoors and requires work done in all types of weather conditions. Physical work required for this position includes, but is not limited to, walking, standing, and climbing up and down ladders and stairs. The stress level associated with this position is moderately high.
