Position Title & Classification: Substitute Food Service Worker Compensation: $19.21 - $22,76 ($20.47 - $24.35 PERS) We are currently hiring a Substitute Food Service Worker at our Oregon School for the Deaf. This position works on an as needed based during the school year (academic year). The Nutrition Services Department is responsible for the overall operation of the food service on campus. This affects students who attend school, staff and outside groups who use the facilities. Our food service workers provide general dessert and cold food prep, serving, dishwashing, and cleaning duties in a school kitchen. Typical Duties Include: Food Preparation * Maintain fruit and vegetable cooler in a clean, sanitary and orderly manner. Clean and sanitize fruits and vegetables. * Prepare fruit, vegetable, and other food items for daily salad bar. * Supervise student's consumption of items at salad bar, limiting portions of popular or high fat or sodium items, such as salad dressing. * Assist in making snacks daily for the residential program. Prepare fruits and vegetables for field trips and sporting events. Fill school and dorm food requests. * Make suggestions and necessary changes to prevent waste and spoilage of items that are prepped and served. * Accurately record foods prepared on production records and temperature log sheets. Sanitation and Cleanliness * Responsible for maintaining clean areas and proper sanitation. * Clean preparations area and assist in overall clean-up after meals. * Assist in dish room/dish machine operations; sort and rack dishes, glasses, utensils; wash dishes, pots and pans, etc.; clean dish machine and dish room. * Recycle cans, boxes, glass, etc. * Assist with department laundry. * Assist in keeping storeroom clean. Miscellaneous Duties * Attend department in-services and staff meetings to maintain knowledge of school policies and procedures, student food allergies and diets, sanitation practices and National School Lunch and Breakfast Program regulations. * Assist others in the performance of their tasks. * Document necessary maintenance work on Work Request forms. * Assist with inventories and deep cleaning of kitchen, storerooms, coolers, and freezers. What we are looking for: * Six months of experience in customer or food service. NOTE: This position requires the employee to obtain a food handler's card within 30 days of hire. * Skill in applying state health, safety, and sanitation regulations, and procedures as they relate to operation of a volume dining or food service facility. * Skill in applying food service policies and procedures. * Skill in following verbal/signed and written instructions. * Basic computer skills needed for the use of email, word processing, spreadsheets, internet and nutrition software. * We encourage our Food Service Workers to obtain ASL certification at Level 1 (ASLPI). Staff obtaining certification at Level 2 are eligible for a five percent (5%) bilingual differential. Working Conditions: * Working with large quantity food service and dish room equipment and cleaning chemicals. * Lifting of heavy objects (30 lbs. or more) and moving of carts that carry several hundred pounds occasionally. * Standing on feet/legs for long periods of time (3.5 hours). * Working in hot/cold areas for short periods such as coolers, freezers, dish room and serving food on the cafeteria line. * Handling of dirty plates, cups, bowls, trays, silverware and trash cans, which may include exposure to gum, spit and vomit. * Requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, exposure to noise and exposure to infectious diseases. * Other risks may include slipping, falling and burns. * Duties require possible daily exposure to infectious, communicable, contagious diseases/conditions Fingerprinting, Background Check, and Drug Screening: * Applicants will be subject to a finger-print based criminal history check including driving record. * Adverse background data may be grounds for immediate disqualification.
