Transportation dispatchers coordinate the movements of means of transport like trucks that are entering terminals. A transport dispatcher contacts drivers and communicates with them through computers, phones or in person. They assign loads to the drivers and make sure that they leave and arrive according to schedule. Dispatchers are available to answer any questions from the drivers and help trouble shoot problems that arise.

Duties and Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to)

Dispatchers keep track of the progress that drivers make during their day.
They use a transportation management system to track the driver’s progress
Also check the drivers’ in and out time and transfer these records into a company’s files
Besides dealing with drivers on a daily basis, they must also handle any request or issue brought forward by the customers.
They process payroll, report accidents, keep driver’s logs and communicate with safety.
Aid in driver recruitment and retention, manage hours of service for drivers
Dispatchers work on a schedule that includes night shifts also. Dispatchers may have to work on weekends and holidays.
Dispatchers need to have strong communication skills; they must give instructions clearly so that they are understood by the drivers.
They must be able to work under pressure and multi task
As dispatchers receive a large number of calls and problems at the same time, they need to stay organized and prioritize the order of calls.
