Nuclear Engineer III / Senior Engineer – Reactor Engineering Summary This position is specific to the Catawba Nuclear Station (CNS), located in York, South Carolina. Reactor engineers work within the Operations Support Engineering – Mechanical (OSEM) team. The overall team is responsible for the strategic direction of high safety significant mechanical systems as well as equipment that monitors and protects the reactor core. The team also supports troubleshooting efforts and routine maintenance/testing. This position requires high individual motivation to solve complex analytical problems and plant issues. This position could include responsibility for other OSEM (non-reactor) engineering functions. Due to the diversity of assignments within the OSEM team, a continuous learning aptitude is required. This position also requires performance within a team-oriented environment that is very customer focused. Responsibilities Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity. Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team. Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity. Conducts engineering related studies. Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces. Displays increasing competency to troubleshoot, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems. Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies. Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files. Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally. Performs a variety of tasks as a Qualified Reactor Engineer such as estimating control rod position and boron concentration for a load follow maneuver, developing fuel assembly move sequences, calculating shutdown margin and Estimated Critical Position (ECP)/Estimated Critical Boron (ECB) values, and performing reactor startup activities, Zero Power Physics Testing (ZPPT), and Power Escalation testing. Supports extended shift hours during refueling or maintenance outages. Accommodates emergent work and effectively multi-tasks while keeping supervisor informed. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with other groups within Site Engineering, Corporate Engineering (fuels, safety analysis, core design, etc.), Operations, and Maintenance. Participates in technical training activities such as formal engineering mentoring and group specific training classes. Safely performs field work in an industrial facility, which could include climbing ladders and lifting objects >25 lbs. Performs Special Nuclear Material inventory activities. Performs new and spent fuel inspections. Support dry cask storage activities. Acts as a member of the reload design team. Basic / Required Qualifications Rx Nuc Engineer III Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. 4-6 years of engineering experience. Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience. Sr Rx Nuc Engineer Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, OR 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer. Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience. Desired Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering Master’s degree in Engineering Professional Engineer license Specific Requirements In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified. Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance. This position is required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty. Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed in office and plant environments. Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires. Hybrid Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the Catawba Nuclear Station as required for ERO responsibilities.
