Western National Mutual Insurance Company is seeking to expand its IT team by adding a Data Engineering Intern. The Data Engineering Intern will provide support to a variety of projects and initiatives, while playing a key role in our day-to-day operations.

Western National Internship Program Summary:
Western National provides a robust internship program designed for individuals aiming to acquire valuable experience in the insurance industry. This program not only offers practical, hands-on opportunities and project work in partnership with our IT Product Engineering team; but interns will also have the opportunity to enhance their existing skill sets through a range of professional development activities, cultivate relationships with employees and fellow interns, and participate in impactful volunteer initiatives within the community.
Position Summary:
As a Data Engineering intern in our Internship Program, you will be a key member of our agile Data Engineering team responsible for the full software development lifecycle: design, development, testing, deployment, and support. We work with the traditional Microsoft Business Intelligence (BI) stack (SQL Server, SSIS, and SSAS) and more; incorporating industry standards and trends related to Enterprise Data Warehousing (EDW), unit testing, automation, and Agile development methodology. Possible tasks that you assist with include:
  • Develop changes to existing application systems to meet the requirements of our business partners and improve our customer experience.
  • Troubleshoot and debug EDW and other data related Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) issues to identify solutions.
  • Contribute to code quality by writing human-readable code, giving and receiving feedback in code reviews and writing and executing unit tests.
  • Collaboratively refine and estimate work with the team.
  • Brainstorm process improvements for our team and enhancements for our processes.
  • Prepare documentation for purposes of learning and onboarding, as well as for releases of code to production.
Requirements
What You'll Need to Succeed:
  • Possess a passion for technology - especially managing and analyzing data.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to give and receive feedback effectively.
  • Engagement in on-going training & education in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Two years of college preferred.
  • Database development and management.
  • Use of ETL/ELT tools such as SSIS.
  • C# and Python scripting.
  • DevOps experience (CI/CD processes and tools, GIT/GITLab/Docker/Jenkins).
  • Translating technical or complex concepts into more accessible terms for a broad audience.
  • Agile software development practices.
Compensation Overview:
The base pay offered for this position will be $20.00/hour.
