Summary:
Under the leadership of the manager/supervisor of the Telemetry unit, provides technical/clerical support to assist in the delivery of quality care to patients.
Experience/Education Requirements:
  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association
  • Ability to read and write and perform basic arithmetic calculations
  • Successful completion of training which includes basic rhythm strip interpretation
Licensure/Certifications
  • None required.
Responsibilities:
  • Ensure that patients are maintained on continuous telemetry
  • Assist with technical/clerical duties which will facilitate the Telemetry operations including routine management of the telemetry room functions and documentation, interpretation of rhythm strips, ensure proper management and maintenance of telemetry equipment
  • Ensure quality patient care through diligent maintenance of continuous telemetry as required by physician order or patient need, and prompt staff notification of dysrhythmias
  • Maintains responsibility for monitor count
  • Alerts RN of any change in patient rhythm
  • Maintains constant observation of all monitors for any rhythm changes and responds as appropriate
  • Reviews alarm settings every shift for each patient
  • Documents on monitor screen location of patients offline
  • Maintains census for each shift with patient name, room number, rhythm, rate, assigned RN

Blood and Body Fluids: Depends on patients' diagnosis, exposure to urine, blood, stool, vomitus, AIDS, Herpes.
TB or Airborne Pathogens: High risk - sputum, secretions, coughing. Usage of PP equipment, properly fit tested mask, and universal precautions minimize risk.
Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):
Speech: Required to communicate with patient/families/staff/doctors, coworkers, ancillary personnel and other department heads. Ability to ask for help.
Vision: Required to observe patients; reading equipment and dials.
Smell: Helpful to note presence of incontinence, vomitus, blood; electrical/fire safety.
Hearing: Necessary to hear alarms, yells for help and to hear patient verbalizations.
Touch: Contact with patients, need to distinguish between hot and cold.

Lifting of patients off their beds that are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Horizontal movement of patients to and from carts/beds who are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Lifting equipment - carry 25-150'- waist high (IV bags, patient trays). Carry charts 25-150' waist high. Filled laundry bags are filled half full so as not to weigh over 35 lbs. Carry fire extinguishers down 1/2 flight of stairs or up 3-4 flights of stairs and several yards in an emergency.
