Position Summary
The Certified Surgical Technician First Assist provides aid with technical functions alongside the surgeon to perform safe care and achieve optimal results for the patient. All tasks will be completed according to the standards of the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBST), Association of Surgical Technologist (AST), Surgical department and Hospital policies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Surgery Technician required
  • Three years of operating room experience preferred
  • Certified Surgical First Assist required
  • Obtain BLS certification within 3 months of hire
Essential Job Functional
  • Expedites the operative procedure by anticipating the needs of the surgeon during all cases
  • Updates and keeps records of surgeon preference cards
  • Don OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Gathers, checks, opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure
  • Assist with prepping of the skin and draping of the patient
  • Positioning the patient
  • Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure
  • Providing visualization of the operative site
  • Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis
  • Participating in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques as appropriate
  • Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes
  • Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings
  • Aid in securing drainage systems to tissue
  • Assists with patient transfers
  • Assists with room turnover and return of unused supplies
  • Assist OR personnel as needed
