Surgical Recovery Coordinator

Position Description: The Surgical Recovery Coordinator (SRC) is responsible for the following: Operating room (OR) coordination and recovery of organs from brain dead (BD) and donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors. This includes all aspects of management of the OR function, personnel, surgeons and perfusionists, perfusion of all abdominal organs, recovery of thoracic organs for research, pulsatile kidney perfusion and surgical technologist functions.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Essential Job Functions:
Organ Recovery
1.Performs OR set up and coordination including the room set up, identification and deployment of appropriate medical equipment, sterile medical supplies, and instrumentation for the recovery of organs including kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas, heart, intestines, vessels, tissue typing material and other organs or vascular composite grafts as directed by the surgical recovery plan.
2.Independently packages and ensures accurate labeling of all organs, specimens, vessels, and blood tubes.
3.Ensures that all supplies and solutions are prepared for abdominal organ perfusion. Performs organ perfusion and communicates appropriately to surgical team.
4.Act as resource to transplant teams in OR to include Assists transplant teams with recovery efforts. Slush, packaging, solutions, tubing
5.Assists in the aseptic surgical recovery of organs as requested by recovery surgeon(s) see O.R. scrub section below.
6.Verifies ABO and serology results.
7.Verifies death pronouncement notes 1 and 2 for Brain Dead (BD) donors.
8.Verifies death pronouncement notes for DCD (Donation Cardiac Death) donors.
9.Accurately completes Organ Recovery documentation and documents the recovery process in digitalDonor (Electronic Medical Records system).
10.Follows all activities as detailed in the SRC/PTC roles and responsibilities in the O.R.
Kidney Pulsatile Perfusion
1.Operates and manages pulsatile perfusion equipment (kidney pump machine).
2.Places kidney(s) on pulsatile perfusion machine.
3.Provides accurate data for the organ allocation team and transplant surgeon(s) with kidney anatomy, perfusion characteristics, and perfusion data provided by perfusion machine.
Surgical Technologist Support (OR Scrub)
1.Aseptically sets up the OR (Operating Room or surgical recovery room) for the Organ Recovery and breaks down the OR Post-Recovery.
2.Performs surgical prep and drape of the donor.
3.Hands off instruments and supplies to surgeon(s) during the organ recovery.
4.Verifies the Authorization and organs to be recovered.
5.Assists the surgeon(s) as needed or directed.
6.Assembles and ensures all pertinent documents remain in the donor chart following completion of the recovery.
7.Documents the recovery process in digitalDonor (Electronic Medical Records system).
Research Tissue/Organ or Specialty Graft Recovery
1.Recovers organs or tissue for research in accordance with researcher protocol.
2.Assembles and ensures all pertinent documents remain in the donor chart following completion of the recovery.
3.Documents the recovery process in digitalDonor (Electronic Medical Records system).
Donor Receiving and Releasing
1.Assists with logistics and coordination of donor transportation to OneLegacy Recovery facilities for recovery.
2.Performs the receiving and releasing of donors in the OneLegacy Recovery facilities from partners such as but not limited to transport companies, coroner offices, or funeral homes.
Facility Maintenance and Cleaning and Materials Management
1.Performs facility cleaning and maintenance such as but not limited to cleaning, disinfecting, mopping, and taking out trash in the Supply Depot, Recovery OR, Morgue, Pre-Prep Staging room, tissue shipping/lab room, coroner office recovery suite, and other areas as needed.
2.Ensures inventory of organ OR supplies are maintained appropriately to support day-to-day operations.
3.Ensures inventory of administrative supplies are maintained appropriately to support day-to-day operations.
4.Removes trash from exterior waste receptacles and maintain the cleanliness of the office space.
5.Assists Central Supply department with instrument cleaning, decontamination, sterilization and inventory management as needed.
Organ Recovery Services- SRC Resource/Logistics/Case Set-up
1.Activates surgical recovery coordinator(s) and OR scrub for organ OR recoveries.
2.Participates in Case Huddles
3.Participates in Pre-Recovery Time Out for organ OR recoveries.
4.Sets up couriers for supplies and equipment.
5.Reviews all Pre/ Post organ OR documentation.
6.Performs other logistical tasks as instructed by management for the purposes of facilitating tissue donation.
7.Is the subject matter expert for staff you utilize when complex issues arise.
Meetings, Trainings Session, P&P, and Competency Assessments
1.Attends all meetings as required.
2.Completes requirements related to all assigned policy & procedures, in-services, online training, and stays current with all assigned training prior to participating in an organ recovery.
3.Trains, learns, and is signed off on all competency assessments throughout the course of employment and on-going as job duties required.
4.Assists in the training of colleagues when signed-off to function as a trainer/preceptor.
Other Responsibilities:
1.Represents OneLegacy and provides customer service in a professional manner when working with funeral homes, ME/Coroner, processors, hospitals, patients, guests, physicians, staff, and other customers/vendors.
2.Performs all duties and responsibilities in compliance with safety guidelines, policies and procedures, regulations as outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations, and other applicable federal, state and local laws.
3.Performs quality control practices as defined by the policies and procedures.
4.Supports the organization’s Standards of Professional Conduct as outlined in the OneLegacy Policies and Procedures, and the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
5.Maintains a neat and organized workstation and environment.
6.Responsible for conducting themselves in the highest professional manner in accordance to the core values established at OneLegacy.
7.Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
Physical Environment/Working Conditions:
Location: Corporate Office or Redlands (as assigned), with work response throughout the Donor Service Area (DSA)
Travel: Required to travel by personal auto, company auto, or air to work locations, meeting sites, and other locations related to donor partners.
Work Hours: Performs a forty-hour workweek as determined by assigned shift and works overtime as required. Assigned days and/or shifts can be changed according to staffing needs. Must be available evenings, holidays, and weekends as required.
Job Qualifications and Requirements:
Education: Required to have at least one of the following: completion of an EMT program, completion of a Surgical Technologist program, current or previous licensure as a paramedic, previous experience in tissue or organ recoveries, experience in an allied health field such as (embalming, physiology, anatomy, mortuary sciences, surgical, EMS, EMT, ER Technologist, paramedic, pathology, nursing), CEBT or CTBS Certifications, or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Experience: 1+ years recovery experience in organ or tissue recovery. Refer to the SRC Skills Base document for clarification on requirements for SRC1 or SRC2.

SRC 2: Organ Biopsy, Research Organ Recovery, and SRC Preceptor or Organ Scrub Preceptor
Certification/License:OneLegacy requires employees to maintain a current California driver’s license and current vehicle insurance. Please refer to OneLegacy’s policy HR 108 – Licensure and Certification for insurance coverage requirements
Requirement:Employee must be able to pass a local or federal government background check.

Salary Range
$68,250 to $77,350
