JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Substitute School Nurse (RN)
REPORTS TO: Building Principal or District Registered Nurse
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Substitute School Nurses are on an on-call/substitute bases, the position is responsible for administering to the individual health needs of students; implementing health care plans for students with special health needs; and following the assigned school's health services program based on requirements established by school policies, procedures and protocols, and by local, state and national regulations and statutes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
:

  • Maintain accurate health records of all students and provide care for students in the health room.
  • Administer first aid, medication and specialized medical treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
  • Administer daily and PRN (as needed) medications and nursing care procedures prescribed by the student's physician.
  • Document all health care provided to students in a timely manner.
  • Distribute/implement health protocols as directed by a District Registered Nurse.
  • Provide immediate care in case of injury or sudden illness.
  • Notify District Registered Nurse in case of an outbreak of disease.
  • Follow Individual Health Care Plans and 504 Plans for students.
  • Provide care for students with special physical needs as needed after receiving training and under the direction of a Registered Nurse (including but not limited to catheterization, insulin administration, and gastrostomy tube feedings).
  • Check for medical conditions and medications prior to field trips. Provide teachers with necessary information. Verify that a trained staff person is assigned to attend field trip as needed.
  • Counsel with students concerning problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision-making practices.
  • Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
  • Perform related work as required.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Position includes frequent contact with students, staff, and parents. Must be able to work effectively with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds. Required to confer regularly with immediate supervisor and follow District policies, and work procedures. Maintain the integrity of confidential information related to students, staff, or District patrons.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Requires standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, simple grasping, pushing pulling, fine motor and gross motor skills, bending, lifting, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and reaching. Ability to lift students as required and has the stamina to stand all day, every day of the week as needed.
Licenses/Special Requirements
RN License from the State of Washington required
Valid CPR, First Aid, AED certification
Valid Washington State ESA Certificate
WSP and FBI fingerprint and background clearance
Valid Driver's License or photo identification
Social Security Card
