Job Description / Essential Elements:
POSITION TITLE: Speech-Language Pathologist
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Director of Special Education, identifies students needing Language/Speech Therapy services in the District. Provides necessary assessment of special problems and needs; provides therapeutic services to alleviate or eradicate disabling condition caused by impairments of language, speech and hearing; establishes meaningful rapport with parents and makes referrals for other services as needed; continually evaluates student's progress, program results and performs other duties directly related to this position description.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General:
Screens students and identifies students needing language, speech and/or hearing services. Screens all referrals from teachers and parents.
Assesses student's language/speech problems and needs, evaluates testing as warranted and interprets evaluative data to parents and teachers.
Coordinates (merges schedules with teachers) planning and therapy with multiple curricula.
Works with student caseload individually or in groups.
Coordinates individual educational programs with parents, school staff and outside agencies as necessary.
Participates in the development, with appropriate staff, of Individual Educational Plans (IEP's) and Individual Instructional Plans (I.E.P.s)
Provides assistance to regular classroom teachers in instructional techniques for students with language/speech/hearing needs.
Maintains necessary records and statistical reports as required.
Working Conditions
Ability to sit and or stand/circulate for extended periods of time.
Ability to see for purposes of reading laws and codes, rules and policies, and other printed matter and observing students.
Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation.
Ability to bend and twist, stoop and kneel. Ability to reach in all directions.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to carry up to 50 pounds.
Moderate to high stress level.
Environmental Conditions:
Work is predominantly in classroom, school environment.
Temperature - normal climate.
Contacts:
Daily contact with students, teachers and school staff.
Regular/Occasional contact with parents, community members, and outside agency personnel.
Occupational Certificates/Licenses:
Holds a valid California teaching Credential (Clinical - Rehabilitative Credential for Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist) issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
First Aid and CPR certification.
