Key Roles and Responsibilities: Performs complex procedures within the Histopathology Laboratory, including routine histotechnology, immunohistochemistry, special stains and cytology preparation, as well as other duties as assigned. Must be capable of completing assigned tasks in a timely manner using standard operating procedures and techniques established by the department. Responsibilities: Must demonstrate a working knowledge of all aspects of Histotechnology i.e., embedding, microtomy in paraffin and frozen sections, routine and special staining, cytology specimen preparation and staining, and immunohistochemistry. Maintains a complete knowledge and understanding of all standard operating procedures within the department from the processing of specimens through to the delivery of the finished diagnostic slide. Maintains a working knowledge of all instrumentation and monitors the associated QA/QC/PM and troubleshooting as assigned by the Anatomic Pathology Supervisor. Maintains compliance with Laboratory policies and procedures, including quality assurance, safety, environmental, infection control and standard precautions, and complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies at all times. Is capable of communicating effectively with all laboratory colleagues, house-wide staff, physicians, outreach facilities and offices, and reference laboratories with a high level of professionalism. Must maintain an in-depth knowledge and performance of the complexities associated with his/her specific clinical section. Responsible for logging of surgical and cytological specimens, assignment of accession numbers and the processing of specimens through to the delivery of the finished diagnostic slide. Assumes responsibility for the accuracy of completed assignments. May assist the Section Supervisor in the evaluation and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation. Must exercise independent judgment in the section. This includes the ability to accept delegated authority for making decisions. Must maintain a complete knowledge, understanding and technical application of all manuals and procedures within the department. May be required to work unscheduled or varying shifts dependent on workload and staffing at the request of the Section Supervisor or Pathologist. Must attend General Laboratory and Histology section departmental meetings. Maintain a clean, organized and safe working environment. Actively participates in projects, activities and educational events which promote performance improvement and institutional goals; completes mandatory educational requirements on time. Monitors inventory of the department and routinely restocks supplies. Alerts leadership of the needs for reordering. Follows established safety and biohazard procedures and universal precautions as established by the institution. Disposes of biohazard wasted following laboratory protocols. Must contribute to positive outcomes and meet the vision and expectations of the organization by exhibiting professional behavior and laboratory expertise. Performs other duties as assigned to support the essential functions of the job and operational needs of the laboratory. Must maintain strict patient confidentiality, follow all laboratory policy regarding privacy and adhere to HIPAA standards. Credentials: American Society for Clinical Pathology (Required) Histology Technologist (Required) Education or Equivalent Experience: H.S. Diploma/GED (Required) High School Diploma: - Required 2 Years experience in a Histology laboratory Associate of Arts or Science (Required) AS degree or higher in Health Science or graduation from an accredited Histotechnology program.
