Our product development teams have a passion for innovation, and a record of accomplishment of developing successful products for the global market, and revolutionize interaction between human and machine!

ORT is subsidiary of Omron Corporation, a $8 billion global technology company celebrating more than 90 years of success.

We currently have an opening for a Systems Engineer at our Pleasanton, CA location. Systems Engineers (SEs) are the key to our success. Together with Project Managers, they hold ultimate accountability for project delivery, acting as Technical Managers and architects, guiding the development working with cross functional teams (hardware and software engineers). SEs own the verification and validation of robotics products and solutions, ensuring that all requirements are met after completing comprehensive testing. The final objective is to execute Safety, Security, Quality, Delivery and Cost (S2QDC) at the project level.

Our Commitment to Employees:

  • Training and Career Development Program to give employees a learning path with the necessary tools and resources they need to help build their career at Omron.
  • Great financial opportunities with competitive compensation, immediate 401k match with 100% vesting, profit sharing, and Blue Cross Blue Shield for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits.
  • Community Programs that includes activities with local non-profit organizations and a Matching Gift Program.
  • Work-Life Balance with Flexible Work Arrangements, Flexible Work Hours, and Sick/Vacation/Holiday Pay.
  • Wellness Programs such as Walking Contests, Nutritional Learning Sessions, On Site Flu shots or Health Screenings, etc.
  • Education Assistance Program.

Responsibilities:

  • Enable ORT's systems engineering process throughout the product development life cycle (from ideation to delivery) and drive the successful technical execution (safety, security, quality, delivery, and cost) of each project assigned.
  • Lead the project-based technical cross-functional collaboration with stakeholders (Product Management, HW, SW, Compliance, Technical Publications, Advanced Manufacturing, Quality, and Service), ensuring cross-functional alignment with a strong customer focus.
  • Define high level and detailed technical requirements from ambiguous marketing/product management requirements, and with input from functional teams. Negotiate these requirements with Product Management, considering design options and key project milestones, to ensure product specifications are clear and appropriately detailed.
  • Contribute to new product architecture and guide how project-based designs are implemented across mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software. Build consensus around architectural solutions, while being assertive with decision making for fast delivery.
  • Coordinate development of test strategy working closely with other Systems Engineers and functional teams (ME, EE, SW, Manufacturing Eng, Service) following V-model methodology to ensure comprehensive test coverage and that the timing and sequencing of testing meets project milestones.
  • Develop, implement, improve, and maintain automated test systems for robotics hardware and software.
  • Own and manage technical risks throughout the project, escalate and resolve technical issues with urgency.

Specific Duties:

  • Manage product requirements and architectural definition with 100% traceability from project initiation to customer implementation.
  • Lead cross-functional design reviews and drive architectural decisions and document accordingly (plan of record, decision log, etc.). Perform, review, and facilitate trade studies with team to select design solutions among options. Drive quantitative data-driven decision making within the team.
  • Implement design controls and utilize the V-model framework to enhance requirement traceability and comprehensive testing. Develop a detailed test plan that aligns with requirements traceability, specifying test cases, test assets, and lab space availability. Maintain thorough documentation of test procedures, configurations, environments, and results to assist systems engineering in achieving full traceability from requirements through testing to compliance.
  • Manage project technical risk. Identify and assess potential risks and propose effective mitigation actions. Utilize DFMEA, DOE, test data, etc. to support quantitative data-driven technical assessments.
  • Provide detailed review of technical information including specifications, test results, user manuals, and safety and compliance certification documentation. Support the creation of technical training materials for end-users.
  • Analyze test results and prepare comprehensive test reports, documenting any defects or issues, and performing root cause analysis. Create clear and concise reports and present your findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Bring up robot platform at system level while troubleshooting and debugging HW/SW subsystem and component levels.
  • Develop automated scripts/tools and improve automated test infrastructure for subsystem and system-level test coverage. Maintain existing SW test suite.
  • Prototype and test new hardware/software technologies, conducting proof-of-concept builds and functional demonstrations for stakeholders. Evaluate the performance and technical feasibility of these innovative components.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, SW Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 1 years of experience in testing and/or deploying robotics or complex hardware/software systems (3+ years preferred).
  • Highly motivated team player with a strong sense of ownership and customer focus.
  • Excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills.
  • Solid analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience in script development and building automated test infrastructure.
  • Software skills: C++ or C# programming, PLC programming, Python or equivalent scripting language, Linux, experience with Robot Operating System (ROS) and Gaebo, experience with MATLAB, Simulink and developing kinematic models.
  • Organizational skills to track multiple simultaneous release test cycles and correlate test results.
  • Ability to travel and work at customer sites in some situations - less than 10%. Occasional international travel to work with worldwide teams
  • Proficient user of collaboration tools including Atlassian Confluence/JIRA/JSM, TestRail, and Bitbucket.
