General
The Senior Engineer, Railroad Structures reports to the Manager, Engineering Structures and Facilities, and is responsible for Caltrain corridor engineering, construction support of capital improvement projects, maintenance support of facilities, project planning support, and design studies support for railroad structures including railroad stations, and railroad facilities for the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain).
Essential Functions & Duties
Examples of Essential Functions:
  • Provide engineering support related to design review, renovations, structural improvements and repairs for Rail Operations, Capital Projects, Construction Management, and other Caltrain departments.
  • Works closely with key stakeholders internally and externally to maintain railroad facilities, structures, tracks, tunnels and bridges (civil/structural).
  • Review and perform capacity calculations on railway structures, design reviews and capital improvement projects to protect the integrity of the railroad structures, including historical preservation and to ensure technical requirements are met.
  • Oversee projects to be performed by outside agencies (3rd party projects) working on Caltrain property.
  • Participate in capital project development studies including consultant negotiations, estimating, and scheduling.
  • Identify root causes of engineering structural issues and present appropriate solutions.
Examples of Essential Duties:
  • Review engineering design project documents including plans, specifications, calculations, cost estimates, project schedules, and constructability review reports.
  • Review project design documents, interface with Caltrain Operations, monitor construction progress, and inspect construction fieldwork.
  • Assist in monitoring and directing the railroad maintenance contractor for Caltrain structures.
  • Perform on-site and routine inspection required by FRA, provide analysis and condition assessment of existing railroad structures.
  • Monitor third party vendors on capital projects to protect the Agency's infrastructure and operational interests.
  • Provide responsible and professional staff assistance to higher level management on projects and related matters.
  • Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect one's self, fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:
  • Bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering, or another related field.
  • Four (4) years of progressively increasing responsibility in structural engineering.
