Contra Costa County Public Works is offering an excellent opportunity for individuals to fill multiple vacancies as an Engineer - Entry Level.
The Contra County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 650 miles of roads, 79 miles of streams and channels, and over 150 County buildings. CCCPWD services include parks and recreation, sandbag distribution, flood control, road and facilities maintenance, and storm water management. CCCPWD operates two airports, Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, and Byron Airport in Byron. CCCPWD strives for continuous improvement to deliver cost effective, safe reliable and sustainable projects, programs, and quality services.
The Engineer - Entry Level will be working with a unit within one of the five engineering divisions- Design/Construction, Engineering Services, Flood Control, Maintenance or Transportation Engineering Divisions. The engineering divisions work on the planning, construction, improvement, and/or maintenance of road and drainage infrastructures within unincorporated County, and flood control facilities for the County Flood Control District.
The Engineer - Entry Level will work closely with Registered Civil Engineers, fellow Staff Engineers, Engineering Technicians, and Administrative Staff to plan, coordinate, and execute projects. The Engineer - Entry Level will have potential opportunities to rotate through the five engineering divisions, allowing them to gain experience in different areas of Civil Engineering.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Working on simple road and drainage projects autonomously, as well as with your supervisor, other staff, consultants, and/or contractors.
  • Planning, designing, and/or reviewing improvement plans, studies, calculations, specifications, estimates, comments letters, permit conditions, grant applications, and Board of Supervisor documents, etc.
  • Coordinating projects with other Public Works Divisions such as Environmental, Real Estate, and Finance Divisions on environmental permits, right of way acquisitions, and account issues, respectively; coordinating with other departments such as the Department of Conservation and Development and Caltrans on the development process and permitting requirements; coordinating with consultants and contractors.
  • Responding to inquiries and complaints from political constituents, department staff, outside agencies, and applicants/permittees; investigating and responding to public inquiries and complaints related to road and drainage infrastructure.

Minimum Qualifications
License Required : Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of state valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License will be accepted during the application process.
Education: Either (1) possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Civil Engineering or (2) possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate
Experience: No experience required.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Previous work experience in the civil engineering field, including internships

Selection Process

  • Multiple Choice Test: Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a multiple-choice assessment.Candidates will be evaluated on necessary knowledge and skills that may include: the ability to collect and analyze data, draw logical conclusions, and make sound recommendations; the ability to interpret and apply rules and regulations; and the ability to communicate effectively in writing. Candidates are not permitted to retake the same assessment within a 6-month period.
