Clemency Contract Attorney

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey seeks a contract attorney to provide temporary, paid, legal support for The Clemency Project over the summer. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, interviewing potential clemency clients, working with clients to draft clemency petitions, and reviewing trial records and other documents. The ideal candidate will have experience with New Jersey criminal and/or sentencing laws, strong interviewing and narrative writing skills, and experience working with incarcerated or vulnerable populations. The selected candidate must be committed to ACLU-NJ's Strategic Framework, including incorporating racial justice principles into legal work.

The ideal candidate will be a licensed New Jersey attorney who can work 15-20 hours per week on a schedule to be arranged based on availability and needs of the project. The ACLU-NJ operates on a hybrid schedule, working in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and attending any in-person appearances or external meetings throughout the week. This position may require some in-office hours and limited travel to New Jersey prisons. The initial contract will be for 3 months, with the possibility of an extension. The salary range for this position starts at $75.00/hour based on experience level.
