About the work environment:
This is a hospital setting in the Level 1 Trauma Center/Pediatric ER Department, where you will be providing care to the highest level of care for premature and ill newborns, children, and adolescents as designated by The American Academy of Pediatrics. This satellite Pediatric Emergency Department is open 24 hours per day and 7 days per week. This location has 16 beds, including a Crisis Room and a room designed for psychiatric care.

Registered Nurse ER - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)
  • Must understand triage to make quick and accurate assessments about incoming Emergency Department patients, including physical, infectious, and mental health conditions.
  • Proficient with the Emergency Severity Index.
  • Obtains patient history and pertinent family history.
  • Check for any allergies and current medications.
  • Obtain height, weight, body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure.
  • Establish, monitor, and recognize cardiac rhythms.
  • Take blood samples, clean, and bandage wounds, and administer medications and intra-venous therapies.
  • Possess knowledge of Infection Control practices and utilizing appropriate practices as needed.
  • Document the plan of care and care given in the patient's medical record.
  • Verify transcription of physician's orders.
  • Carry out prescribed Physician's orders and document inpatient medical records.
  • Communicate pertinent patient data to the Charge Nurse and/or Physician as appropriate.
  • Re-assess the patient's condition and revise plans-of-care based on problems that the Nurse identifies.
  • Possess knowledge of actions and usual dosages of the most commonly used emergency drugs and their location on the crash cart.
  • Assess and document patient responses to medications that have been administered.
  • Instruct patients and their families regarding prescribed medications/therapies and surgical/diagnostic procedures that must be accomplished.
  • Operates defibrillator, EKG machines, cardiac monitors, and other technical emergency equipment.
  • Care for patients with Swan-Gans catheters, arterial lines, and mechanical ventilators.
  • Participate in discharge planning.
  • Can titrate medications.

Registered Nurse ER - QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: must have a minimum of an Associate of Science in Nursing degree; Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Experience: Must have either two (2) years of RECENT peds ER experience, OR three (3) years of combined adult and Peds experience.
  • Certification: Must have an ACLS. BLS and PALS through either the American Heart Association or the client, or by an American Association vendor.
  • License: Must have a current, full, and unrestricted license in the District of Columbia; alternatively, will accept those who have an application for a Registered Nurse license with the District of Columbia already submitted and pending.
