JOB GOAL: To support the Director of Health Services and building-based school nurses throughout the district in providing health services to the students of Barnstable Public Schools.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
  2. A bachelor’s or master’s degree of nursing
  3. Experience as a Registered Nurse in a child health, community health, or other relevant clinical nursing setting. Prior experience as a pediatric nurse and/or school nurse preferred
  4. Current, or ability to attain within one school year of hire, licensure as a School Nurse (all levels), by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
  5. Current CPR certification
  6. Bi- or multi-lingual (specifically Portuguese and/or Spanish), preferred
  7. Experience with electronic health records and charting
  8. Excellent communication and organizational skills
  9. Flexibility to work in different settings and with various age levels
  10. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

REPORTS TO: Director of Health Services, Executive Director of Social-Emotional Learning and Student Services, and Building Principals

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The floating school nurse will perform, or will work with other nurses in performing, the daily operation of the school health offices. The floating school nurse will be assigned to cover nursing absences or to the school with greatest need for support, as deemed by the Director of Health Services. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Providing medical interventions and nursing procedures for acute and chronic conditions according to district protocol and standing orders.
  2. Administering medications per physician orders and state regulations.
  3. Maintaining electronic health records.
  4. Communicating and collaborating with nurses, students, parents/guardians, school staff, public health and health care providers regarding student health needs/concerns.
  5. Performing mandated health screenings.
  6. Maintaining confidentiality as set forth by FERPA and HIPAA regulations.
  7. Attending nursing department meetings and professional development.
  8. Other duties assigned by the Director of Health Services and Executive Director of Social-Emotional Learning and Student Services.
