Job Description
The Senior Network Engineer is fully experienced with an exceptional skill set responsible for the architecture, design and support of the enterprise network infrastructure. The individual successfully works with a team of network engineers and vendors while also collaborating with cybersecurity and other IT team members on testing, integration, and deployment of network systems. The individual serves as a key contributor and advisor to less seasoned engineers and analysts and is a liaison to the Lead Network Engineer. Additionally, the Lead Network Engineer manages the resources under their area of responsibility in order to ensure that the necessary support of new systems is available. Further, the position may include being involved in some limited leadership activities.
Responsibilities
  • Provide advanced level network administration/maintenance for enterprise VMWare, SAN and Data Centers in multiple locations.
  • Provide advanced level network administration for enterprise video conferencing and VOIP systems.
  • Perform firmware, hardware, OS upgrades, and required patch management.
  • Monitor overall network performance and perform the necessary tuning.
  • Maintain backup copies for all network component configurations.
  • Be actively involved in implementing/testing disaster recovery (DR) process.
  • Regularly test the validity of network redundancy and failover circuit testing.
  • Analyzes and defines systems information requirements and objectives for application and systems enhancements or replacements as it affects networking to ensure performance metrics are achieved.
  • Prepares written documentation of the need for network changes or replacements and coordinates staff and manages multiple projects or large tasks for their implementation
  • Prepares written documentation in support of network enhancements and replacements (hardware/software).
  • Identifies and works collaboratively to resolve internetworking issues between different vendor systems and devices.
  • Develops, implements, documents and validates comprehensive test plans of relevant networking components and related interfaces.
  • Devises and conducts pre- and post-project benchmarking metrics for moderate to complex projects.
  • Participates in the system selection process, including needs assessment, RFP and vendor selection.
  • Performs 3rd level networking support
  • Performs 24/7 on-call support if applicable

  • Project development life cycle methodologies desired.
  • Cross application/system workflow and data relationships is required.

Work Environment: May be required to travel to/from and work in the various Connecticut Children's locations, including patient care areas. May be required to travel for mandatory certifications
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or related discipline; equivalent experience acceptable.
  • Seven (7) Years minimum in-depth experience performing network engineering (hardware and software), network design, planning and implementing WLANs, LANs, and WANs using the latest technology.
  • Three (3) years of experience in related planning, analysis, configuration, installation, management and coordination work.
  • Ability to handle basic network administration tasks to fulfill backup role if needed.
  • Demonstrated experience working well with customers of varying levels of technical expertise in high pressure situations and complex environments.
  • Required Certifications/Systems: CompTIA A+, Network +, Windows, UNIX, Linux
  • Preferred Certifications:
    • Cisco Certified Internetwork Professional or Expert
    • Brocade Certified Network Engineer
    • Extreme Networks Certifications
