JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: NURSE AIDE File 512
Reports to: Nurse, Building Principal and Director of Special Education
Job Objectives: Administers a health service program as prescribed by the Nurse and London City Schools to help students benefit from the district's educational programs and services. Works with colleagues to ensure the provision of all services mandated by State and Federal law. Uses each contact with the public as an opportunity to promote a positive impression of the school district. Required to obtain and maintain current background checks and an aide permit through the Ohio Department of Education.
NOTE: Legal restrictions prohibit the diagnosis and treatment of individuals beyond the evaluation of symptoms and administering first aide in emergencies. Students with suspected health problems are referred to their parents/guardians for follow-up by a physician and/or other medical provider.

Minimum • High School diploma
* LPN license is required
Qualifications: • CPR/First Aid Certified
* Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.).• Successful completion of a criminal background investigation.
• Ability to learn appropriate skills for the position.
• Ability to physically manage students with disabilities.
• Demonstrates maturity and the ability to work with students and their families.

Functions: with a disability to perform essential functions.
  • Learns the purpose and proper procedures to perform all assigned duties. Seeks advice when expectations are unclear.
  • Administers oral medications and maintains logs as instructed by the District Nurse.
  • Orders/replenishes first aid supplies in the building where he/she is housed
  • Performs head lice screenings and reports any students who have head lice to the nurse and principal
  • Performs vision, hearing and scoliosis checks under the direction of the district nurse.
  • Communicates with special education case managers (ie. Psychologists, Speech and Language Pathologists) to complete and write-up vision and hearing screenings on student referred to special education.
  • Provides support to students who are diabetic: Monitors blood sugar levels, does insulin calculation for shots, gives shots as needed.
  • Makes calls to parents/follows-up on any long-term absences due to illness, head lice, etc.
  • Completes incident reports and makes calls to parents reporting student illness or injury
  • Examines, treats and reports injuries that may occur when the school nurse is not in the building
  • Updates/maintains student health and immunization records including information for current students and for new students (and contacts former schools when we don't have that information)
  • Conducts appropriate follow-up activities to failed screenings (re-screening, second letter or call to parent, notify teacher)
  • Enters annual health information on the data base for Vision, Hearing, diagnosis, medications, blood pressure, scoliosis and reports unique health situations to the staff
  • Implement student health service plans as directed by the District Nurse (diabetes shots, monitoring, etc. AIDE
  • Demonstrates proper hand washing techniques to 1st graders
  • Conducts re-checks as needed for all screenings and referrals
  • Sends referral letters to new students who have been referred and gives a list to the principal
  • Communicates all legitimate concerns to the supervisor
• Encourages a positive outlook, cooperation, active participation, accountability, dependability, consistent attendance, punctuality, etc.
• Reports evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law.
• Helps students with medical and/or physical needs as trained by a licensed health care professional (e.g., personal hygiene, toileting, catheterization, transfers, mobility, lifting, carrying, etc.).
• Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.
