JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The Utah County Sheriff's Department is the law enforcement agency in the county and is responsible for the preservation of the peace. The Sheriff and deputies make arrests, oversee the courts and the County Correctional Facility, and prepare legal documents for the Sheriff's sale.

Testing for this position was conducted in August, and offers were extended to the top candidates. We will conduct testing again at the beginning of 2025.

Please note that you will not be notified of the next steps until a new testing date is scheduled.

If you are interested in a career in law enforcement but aren't sure where to start, this is a great opportunity-no prior experience is required.

Candidates will be invited to participate in testing during our next hiring period. Applicants must take a written/video test and achieve a minimum score of 70% in each section.

Additionally, applicants must complete a physical fitness test, which includes:
- 1.5-mile run: Completed in 17 minutes or less
- Isometric plank: Hold for at least 30 seconds
- 10 pushups: No time limit, no resting during the test

Candidates will also need to pass the POST Entrance Physical Fitness Test on their first day at POST, which includes:
- 1.5-mile run: Completed in 16 minutes and 11 seconds or less
- Vertical jump: Minimum of 14.5 inches
- Isometric plank: Hold for at least 30 seconds
- Push-ups: Minimum of 14, with no time limit or rest during the test

Oral Interview:

- Top candidates who successfully pass the Utah County Sheriff's Department pre-employment physical fitness test and written/video test will be invited for an oral interview.

The Opportunity:

Performs certified corrections work related to the admittance, housing, and releasing of inmates at the Utah County Security Center under the general direction of a Sergeant-Corrections. Incumbents may be assigned to work in various functional areas of the Security Center such as housing, housing security, booking/medical security, transportation, and inmate work programs. Incumbents in this classification are required to have relevant experience and/or higher education completed.

Starting Pay:

Deputy Sheriff I - Corrections, Grade 723 Step A $27.97 to Step G $32.14

Deputy Sheriff II - Corrections, Grade 724 Step A $29.99 to Step G $34.49

Schedule: Various Schedules (rotating nights/weekends/holidays)

Job Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 19 years old to attend the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications :
  • Incumbents must obtain Corrections Officer certification through the Utah State Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) agency within the first twelve (12) months in the position.
    • County employees being reassigned or transferred to this classification must obtain certification within six (6) months of being reassigned or transferred to this classification.
  • Incumbents are required to maintain POST certifications and successfully complete required annual training.
  • Incumbents may be required to successfully complete annual Emergency Vehicle Operation training.
  • Incumbents are required to maintain annual weapons qualification for all assigned weapons.
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and obtain a valid State of Utah driver's license within sixty (60) days of employment.
  • Selected applicants will be required to undergo an extensive background check, including a polygraph test, psychological test, medical exam, and drug screening.
Preferred Candidates will possess some of the below attributes:
  • Eighteen (18) months of work experience as a certified corrections officer
  • Preference may be given to applicants with a bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, education, criminal justice, communications, or a related field.
