Job Summary & Core Responsibilities:

Operate Steam Rack to clean interior and exterior of all types of freight and tank cars. Utilize steam, water, cleaning compounds, caustics, diesel, and solvents and hot water to clean interiors of tanks and hoppers.

    • Steam and chemical clean interior and exterior of cars to remove a variety of commodities, linings, and coatings from all types of freight and tank cars. Make necessary connections to drain, steam, and flush tanks and coils.
    • Regulate valves to inject water and steam into tank; add cutting and neutralizing agents such as caustic soda, detergents, solvents, as prescribed.
    • Insert roto-jet and cleaner head and operate valves; soak steam, agitate with air, or boil by connecting steam line to tank coils. Drain tank and channel residue to sluice way; flush tank with clean water.
    • Enter tank, scrape and chip remaining residue: flush with high pressure water hose.
    • Remove a variety of tank linings and coatings such as vinyl paints, asphaltic of resin base, synthetic of natural latex rubber.
    • Score liner with knife as required, pump lining removal solution into tank and boil with steam; soak as prescribed.
    • Test chlorine cars for gaseous residue, using prescribed procedures; connect lines and purge.
    • On pressure cars, remove safety valve. After steam cleaning, remove steam condensate with air; remove dome pressure head and clean.
    • Operate automatic steam generating unit; check steam pressure, water level; blow out low water cut off unit.
    • Measure out boiler treating ingredients as specified and add to tank.
    • Lubricate pumps, motors, and blowers. Shut off, drain, blow out water and steam lines as required.
    • Replace such items as pipe, valves, gaskets. Make minor repairs to hoses, valves.

    • Minimum Years of Experience: At least 2 years previous experience
    • Industry Specific Experience: At least 1 year of Railcar experience
    • Highly organized and able to prioritize and manage time efficiently with the ability to handle stress in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
    • Ability to work under tight time constraints, handle sensitive data, and multi-task so that deadlines can be met.

    • Minimum Education Requirements: High school diploma or GED required
