Under the general direction of the Program Supervisor, provides public health nursing services to individuals and families.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assess and monitor community health status, factors that influence health, and patient and community needs and assets.
  • Investigate and address health problems and hazards affecting the community.
  • Effectively communicate with the patient and community regarding health, factors that influence it, and how to improve.
  • Strengthen, support, and mobilize the patient and community to improve health.
  • Collaborate to champion policies and plans that impact public health.
  • Utilize regulatory actions to promote the health of the community.
  • Promote equitable access to services and care.
  • Collaborate with and support a diverse and skilled public health workforce.
  • Collaborate in a strong public health infrastructure for the community.
  • Provide STI and HIV counseling and testing per protocols.
  • Provide gynecological and male health exams when necessary.
  • Administer medications per medical standing orders including STI treatment and birth control.
  • Maintain HAPIS certification to provide HIV counseling and testing, as needed or appropriate.
  • Provide specimen collection (venipuncture, urine, stool, sputum, etc.) of all age groups.
  • Provide immunization to adults and children; extensive knowledge of immunization schedule and recommendations.
  • Provide immunization waiver education.
  • Possess ability to exercise independent judgement within scope of practice and standing orders.
  • Provide clinic services at the Calhoun County Correctional Facility to inmates.
  • Work within the limited community resources by referring patients to the appropriate local agencies.
  • Provide education and resources on subjects such as, family planning, immunizations, lead exposure and prevention and safer sex practices.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality in all settings.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide a nursing assessment on individuals who present for services, possibly including a health history, physical assessment, and a psychosocial assessment.
  • Provide information and referrals as necessary.
  • Document services performed; maintain required program records.
  • Monitor inventory of medications per Michigan Pharmacy Law and place order as is necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with Accreditation standards.
  • Provide input for new or revised policies and procedures.
  • Participate in team and general staff meetings.
  • Participate in public health quality programs (e.g., Quality Improvement, Quality Assurance, Quality Control).
  • Participation in emergency exercises and training required.
  • Assess own needs for professional growth and participates in education that increases knowledge and skills in area of responsibilities; maintains required Nursing CEUs.
  • Adhere to established policies and procedures and maintain client confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Must be a Registered Nurse licensed to practice in Michigan. BSN preferred.
  • One to three years of experience in nursing is required, with an emphasis in public health preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to provide courteous and accurate information often under stressful situations for families. Multilingual preferred.
  • Good computer skills to communicate regularly via e-mail and to collect data on electronic forms or formatted spreadsheets.
  • Mental ability to frequently handle simultaneous projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with frequent distractions due to people and/or telephone calls.
  • Occasionally required to climb and/or kneel and periodically required to stoop or bend to accommodate different working positions.
  • Frequently required to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time, perform repetitive movement, and/or work in confined areas.
  • A valid Michigan driver's license, an acceptable driving record, and a personal vehicle including proof of vehicle insurance are required.

  • May have contact with infectious disease and exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
  • On-call availability to respond to emergencies (e.g., program-related and public health emergencies).
  • Extended workdays (beyond 8 hours/day) and weekends or holidays may be required.
  • May encounter threatening people and other dangerous situations.
